pa MINISTER CETS AFTER PEDLERS Causes the Arrest of Fourteen, Who Are Locked Up in Cells} All Night. POLICE CAPTAIN PROTESTS Dean Says that the Arrests Should Be Made in the Morning that-the Prisoners Might Not Suffer Hardships Fourteen hapless pushcart peddlers in cells in the East Fifth street po- lice station bemoaned their hard luck in a city where a license fee is taken from them for permission to peddle in the streets and then they are driven about and bullied by the po- lice or locked up like criminals for exercising the right which they have pald for. In the sergeant’s room the air was thick and nauseating with the odors of decaying fruit on their fourteen pushcarts, and Capt. Dean was in- dignantly protesting against what he termed the heartlessness of a com- plainant who would have the ped- dlers locked up at night instead of in the morning, when they could get a speedy hearing in court. A clergyman was the complainant. He is connected with a church near Fourteenth street and Second avenue, and has been a frequent visitor to the police stations in East Twenty-second ana East Fifth streets, alwaye to com- plain of the appearance of these men who strive to carn a living as push- cart peddlers. This time he came in the evening, and through his complaint the push- cart men were “put under the watch.” When a period of fifteen minutes was toled off against a peddier at any given location, the policeman would put up his watch and swoop down upon him, taking him and his cart to the station- house. The story of these cases, from the standpoint of the peddlers, is so many hours locked up at night while their stocks of perishable goods rot and are rulned, Then there will be a $2 or $3 fine in the Police Court because they stood more tham fifteen minutes in one place without moving their carts. “These raids ought to be made in the morning,” said Capt. Dean. ‘Then they could be disposed of in the Police Court within an hour or two, and that would not be so completely ruinous to the ped- dlers as it is when they are locked up over night while their fruit spoils in the close atmosphere of ‘the statlon- ouse,'” FEAR HUSBAND AT WE'S BEER, Aid of Police Invoked to Prevent Conklin from Making Disturb- ance at Funeral. Palice were on guard in the home of John Cassidy,at No, 341 Tenth avenue, while funeral services over his daugh- ter, Mrs. Mamie Conklin, were in progress. Cassidy was fearful that the wom- an’s husband, Patrick Conklin, now under $5,000 bail in connection with her suspicious death, might appear to claim the body and disturb the services, Conklin, who lives at No. 447 West Six- teenth street, visited the home of his father-in-law, where a wake was being held for the dead woman, Conklin’s presence was most unwel- come to his dead wife's people and he was told #0. As a result of his visit John Cassidy visited the West Twen- tieth street police station and asked for police protection, and also as to the right of Conklin to take his daughter's body from his home. Mr, Cassidy sald that when Conklin was told that he was not wanted at the wake he became angry and threatened to engage an undertaker and have the body removed. He was told that the police could not lay down the law in the case, but that if Conklin became disorderly he would be arrested. Conklin claims that his wife committed euicide. On Monday night, he declares, he found her in a dying condition in her home, haying been shot twice. She was removed to St. Vincent's Hospital, where she died an hour after.
