i] i q UPROAR IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS OVER KITCHENER. Irish Denunciation Stirs English Wrath— French Deputies in Riot. LONDON, June 5.—By the adop- tion of the cloture, thus cutting off debate, the House of Commons to- day granted Lord Kitchener £50,000 ($250,000) in recognition of his ser- vices In South Africa. By an odd cvincidence, it was just three years ago to-day that the House voted Gen. Kitchener £30,000 (150,000) on account of the Soudan campaign. Mr, Redmond, during the debate, anid Lord Kitchener had cause the deaths of 15,000 children and had warred on women This caused an uprear in the House a~* Mr, <dmond was unable to pro- ceed. Later, when Mr. Balfour moved a vote of thanks to the army the Irth members retaliated and the Speaker was compelled to appeal for order. In the Hei :e of Lords the Premier, Lord Salisbury, paid a high tribute to the colonial troops. He said England was never safer than during the period of the war. In accordance with the King's mos- sage to the House of Commons yester- day the Government leader, A. J. Bal- four, this afternoon moved a vote of £50,000 ($250,000) to Lord Kitchener, Mr. Balfour, in supporting the motion, referred to Lord Kitchener's rapid pro- motfon, He said it had been given to few public servants to compass so much work for their country in so short a time. Redmond Hooted Down. William Redmond (Irish Nationalist.) started what developed into almost a riot by remarking that Lord Kitchener would go down to his- tory as a General who had “made war on women and children.” ‘This remark called forth loud cries of “Withdraw” and appeals to the Chatr- man to cali Mr. Redmond to order. The Chairman said the expression used was not disorderly, but a majority of the House refused to Hsten any further to Mr, Redmond and Interrupted him with all kinds of shouts, After a quarter of an hour spent by Mr. Redmond in fruitless endeavor to gain a hearing, the closure was moved. he closure was adopted by 273 to 136 votes and the grant of £60,000 to Lord Kitchener was carried by 899 to 44 votes, ‘The minority consisted of Irish Nation- alists and two or three Radicals, —_-—. RIOT OF DEPUTIES ; LOUBET CALLED THIEF, PARIS, June 5.—During a dispute in the Chamber of Deputies to-day M. De Largentaye (a Reactionary Deputy from the Cotes-du-Nord) exclaimed: “Yes, you Republicans are swindlers and traitors and in a way foreigners." ‘A number of Republican Deputies re- torted hotly, whereupon M. De Largen- tave added excitedly: “And your President of the Republic is a thief” A scrimmage, during which fisticufts were exchanged, ensued, half a dozen Deputies, including the Marquis de Dion, M.
