NEW YORK, WEDNESDAY , SUNK 4, 1902 FIERCE CHICAGO RIOTS: SCORES IN HOSPITALS, Wild Mobs in Streets Attack Caravans of Meat Wagons Driven by Non-Union Men and Pro- tected by Police—Heads Cracked by the Dozen and Shots Fired in Some Battles—Streets Blockaded. CHICAGO, June 4.—Fierce rioting has been going on throughout the city to-day on account of the attempts of the packing houses to deliver meat with non-union drivers. Shots have been fired and in many cases scores of men have been beaten and seriously injured. It is impossible to find out whether any one has been killed, The streets are thronged with rioters and traffic in many cases is blocked. The riots grew out of a strike by the stockyards' teamsters, which has spread to many other lines of business in the city. The ten State street department stores succeeded in effecting a settle- ment with their drivers at conference held this afternoon, and the men, 1,300 in all, returned to work.
