In the row that followed Mrs. Ida Basucky, of No, 190 Forsyth street, was arrested. Magistrate Cornell sentenced her to three months on the island, which so enraged the mob in the street that the reserves in all the east side stations were ordered to be ready for instant duty. Mrs, Basucky, who is a gigantic woman, was the leader of the mob about the police court. Standing on the steps, she made a speech advising the people to overinrow the police. Policeman Devine, of the Eldridge} strect station, ordered her from the steps. She refused to go, and he caught her by the shoulder to push her away, Woman Fought Policeman, The woman turned on him, grabbed him around the waist and with a precision that would do credit to a trained wrestler stretched him on his back on the sidewalk, Immedl- ately dozens of women jumped on him and began to belabor him. Devine shouted for help and three policemen came to his asaistance. | They managed to rescue him, with) his clothes half torn from his body, | and also to arrest Mrs. Basucky. | It became necessary to club the crowd before the woman could be taken into the court. The reserves from Hldridge Street Station cleaned the street and all was quiet for about an hour until the news of the punishment that had been meted out to Mrs. Basucky spread, Then, the reserves having been withdrawn, thousands of excited’ peo- ple gathered in Essex street, threat- ening to mob the court-house and prison, Many heads were broken in the conflict that followed. Then several of them entered the shop and put Mr. Schlosky out of business, temporarily at least. They were demolishing his furniture when Policeman Dooley arrived and ar- rested Mrs. Pflax. He was dragging her out of the shop when he was attacked by the others, and he had to fight all the way to Grand street.
