LINER CAUSES WORRY. | Friends of Passengers Anxio ¢ News—Owners Say § s He Heard From. LONDON, March 8.—The head of the Cunard steamship line at Liver- pool telegraphed to the Associated Press this afternoon as follows: We know the Etruria is proceed- ing slowly and there may be some little time yet before we hear from her. There is no ground for uneasi- ness.” Other officers of the Cunard line express confidence that the disabled Etruria will soon reach the Azores. Nevertheless, friends of the passen- gers are much worried, When the accident occurred on the 26 the Etruria and Umbria had just signalled “good night” by wireless telegraph. The operator on the Etruria tried to catch the Umbria again, but failed and the Btruria was left hopelessly adrift. Signals were sent up which soon at- tracted the attention of the freighter laid by until morn- ad broken the Jer when It broke loose ys was spent in rigging a fury rudder whicb was not particularly effective. Fifty Miles in Two Days. The tank steamer Ottawa, which brought the news of the Btruria’s acct- dent, left the two boats on Feb. 2% At that time they were 400 miles from the Azores and had travelled but fifty miles in two days, No word has been received in this city regarding the Etruria since Tues- day, when a telegram was received from Robert J. Campbell, a corre spondent of The Evening World on board the disabled steamer, giving a report of the accident and the means adopted for towing the boat to port. This cablegram was sent by Mr. Campbell to Horta, on the Azores, by the captain of the steamer Ottawa, and was the first information obtained re- garding the disabled boat, ‘The correspondent said that at that time the William Cliff was unable to any progress in towing this can readily be under- none knows that the Etruria Is a boat ¢ CUM has a tonnage of but 2 | Absence of Steering Gi | As the Etruria has no steering gear| |! she will go in a gigaag course while | being towed exvept when the “speed” is ad rapid progress would {boamble even if the tow 1 sufficient power to make ® Ottawa four days to reach le the Etruria, TC is vii $FO6440506 8 jo Prince Henry, ria, of the Society of Juriapradence, Ho- * Dinner Waldort-A: jo Gen, Funston, Lo- eare Club, Carnegie Ballding.
