WASHINGTON, June 1.—The bulle:in of Mrs, McKinley's condition Issued this morning {6 the most encouraging state- ment given out since her return. ‘The three physiciana were only in consult: tion a short time, and at 11 o'clock, tm- mediately after their departure, Secre- tary Cortelyou gave out the following bulletin: POVERTY'S TOTS AT LAWN PARTY Mrs. J. There was a gmail army of bright-faced,r o=y-cheeked, eurly-patred and hollday-attired little ones, all aglow with anticipation. The happy little boys and girls were the guests of Mrs. J. J. Connaughton, and the reason for their assemblage was that every year for twenty-six are their hosters has given an outing to the children of those whom she meets in her self-imposed task of doink every- thing she can to help the deserving poor and make them fit to help themselves. Grateful parents and big sisters brought the tots this morning from the four quarters of the big city, at the expense of the hostess, and gave them over to the charge of Mrs. Connaugh- ton, who undertook to give them all the fun that could be crowded into one day. To the Zoo went the Iittle guests, not marching soberly in line, like 4 juventle asylum out for an airing, birt with the care-free hop, skip of merry childhood, ‘Then to the carrousels, the swings, the boats and the green lawns. where romp and games made the welkin ring. ‘At noon the big hampers that accom- panied the party fn a sort of commis- sary train were opened and the benefit conferred wes made manifest to the soiling hostess. How they did eat and how they did enjoy eatin, Buch a day cannot be described. It can only be remembered and marked in big golden letters on the dary of happy youth. There were sixty-five in Mra. Con- naughton’s party this year. They were invited, just Mke real soclety people, with the unnecessary injunction to be certain to attend. Such tales as will be told to-night to grateful mothers will sound like extracts from “Alice in Won- deriand.” Mrs, Connaughton is a widow, living at No. 821 West Twenty-eighth street, and devotes every morning of her life to charitable work among the poor. She is not @ bellever in the cold and formal bestowal of alms. as at the hands of most organizations, but chooses rather to give her money where it is most needed And can do most good. She la the daughter of a wealthy Buffalo Physician and is following 9 plan of work which her mother enjoined upon her. SIDE LIGHTS ON KING EDWARD Fond of Dancing and Skating and Collects Firearms.
