SHARKEY’S FIRST How the Sailor Paid Tribute to Dead Hero, Lieut. Emerick. ‘Tom Sharkey, prize fighter. heard to- Gay for the firat time of the death of the man who was responsible for his Present position in the game of sports. Had it not deen for Lieut. R. C. Emer- ick, engineer in the United States Navy, Bharkey might be a “bosun’’ to-day on one of Uncle Sam's warships. A reporter for The Evening World who met Lieut. Emerick in Manila in November, 1599, was in Hong Kong last November when this naval officer died after a short Illness of typhoid fever. The true story of Sharkey's first fizht has never been told. Lieut. Emerick, in the cafe of the Hotel Oriente, re- lated the Incidents of that encounter. It took place in Honolulu and was one e@f the fastest fist battles ever wit messed in the United States Navy. Sharkey had earned the good-will of Léeut. Emerick by his application to duty and the skill and strength he exhibited in hia friendly matches with the fellows of his mess. There was an ugly cus- tomer aboard the ship whose muscular development was only exceeded by a temper that continually got him into trouble. He had taken a dislike to @harkey, and the feeling was mutual. It was Lieut. Emerick who made the meeting possible. The fight was fast and energetic while it lasted, but “Bad Bill" finally succumbed to the swings of strapping sailor Sharkey. That fight established Sharkey's repu- tation in the Navy, and opened the way for hin: in California a couple of years later, when he made his debut tn the ring. Tom was seated !n his parlor with his mother and afster when he was asked: “Do you know tha: Lieut, Emerick ts dead?" deut. Emerick dead? You don't tell me! Why, only’ two years ago I saw him, big, strong and healthy. Now he's dead, Why. it was that man who made me what I am. The big fighter lowered his heed for a minuie. Then he looked up and his eyes wandered through the mist and over the wet meadows of heepehead Bay. He was strangely silent and his eyes grew moist as ha pictured the hard days of long ago, when he was only a sailor. All in changed now, for Sharkey is tich, and gvill fight once more for the championship of the world and the adoration that goes with it. His mind reverted to years ago, when & brown-skinned, blue-eyed, smiling young naval officer called him two his quarters, “Can you do the trick, Tom?" and a grin ovexspread the rugged and kindly features of the Lieutenant. “That I can, alr. I am fit as @ fiddle, ang ‘Bad Bill’ will know he's been in a figh:, sir." “I have arranged tt for you, Tom, and I'll back you to my limit." Sharkey will never forget the slap on the back and the reminder that di pation would not improve his condition: ‘om never forgot those wi the battle he fought, and how he won, Was Hie True Friend. “He was a friend of mine,’ speaking to nix mother as mi fe man who Interviewed him. the scrape I have been in and mi the lecture that fine chap gave me. he always nad a pleasant word, and when no one was about he'd make me 0 through my exercises and tell me how to train, “He w lover of strong men, in those days I was a bull. { was ony an enlisted man and he an officer, he never forgo: I was human. why [ llked him.
