ee gD MAY WED A SOLDIER, Lady Randolph Churchill, It Is Hinted, Engaged. SWINDLER PERKINS A BRITON. He Figured as an American Jou: nalist and Lawyer, but Wai Born Kent. (Copyright, 1895, by the Associated Pres.) LONDON, Sept. 21.—A mysterious paragraph Is going the rounds of the newspapers to the effect that the en- gagement will @hortly be announced of an officer of the Guards to the widow of a titled Member of Parliament, recently deceased. The lady, tt is added, 1s wealthy, dark and beautiful. It is supposed that the woman alluded to is Lady Randolph Churchill. Katherine Beauclerk, daughter of the Duke of Bt. Albans, is to be married to Lady Henry Somersct's son next jyeal Miss Jessie Ackerman, of San Fran- eisco, and Misses Schaffner and Pratt, of Pennsylvania, have just returned from an expedition to Iceland, where y went to organize the White Rib- \ban Society. Ackerman rode 200 milea on |pofpeback in the performance of her wok. It ow transpires that Geoffrey Per- Be who long figured in the English 8 an American journalist and lawyel, and whose career was inter- rupted this week by a sentence of ten lyears’ imprisonment for swindling, was ‘porn in Kent, England. A few years ago Perkins became (prominent in the smoking-rooms of the {big hotels. Since then he has attempted jsome species of swindling upon nearly every well-known American who has lcome to London. His career as a blackmailer was re- markable, his victims representing all ranks of society, from earls to street walkers. He claimed that Gov. Perkins, of California, was his uncle. Among his achievements was getting jpossession of title deeds to a farm in California from its owner, John Thom- son, last year. This case attracted much attention at the time. aes THE LONDON STAGE. $20,000 Production of “Romeo and Jultet” To-Nigh (Copyright, 1895, by the Associated Press.) + LONDON, Sept. 21.—By far the great- est dramatic event of recent years will occur this evening, in the production of “Romeo and Jullet,"" at the Lyceum. It is stated that no less a sum than $20,000 has been expended by Forbes Robertson upon this venture, and it goes without saying that the mounting ef the play, the costuming and the accessories will be on a scale fully equal to that of the best traditions of this famous theatre. Mr. Robertson will be remembered by those Americans who witnessed his’) performances while supporting Mary Anderson and Henry Irving on the other side of the Atlantic, In this connection an old story ts recalled—that. while he was in Mary Anderson's company he fell deeply in love with her, and that they were at one time engaged. Mr. Robertson's sterling character and {ndividuality have won him influential friends, and the interest in to-night’s performance {s something unprece- dented, The demand for seats has been enough to fill the house four or five times over. Much interest also prevalls in the Ju- Met of Mrs. Patrick Campbell. ‘The pers have been for weeks condoling with Mrs. Campbell upon the fact that her impersonation of the part must inevita- bly be contrasted with that of the late Adelaide Nelson, who 4s still remember-|# ed as the ideal Juliet of the English stage. The audience to-night will comprise all that is best in the literary, artistic, fashionable and dramatic world of Lon- don, many leaders of those circles hay- ing returned to town expressly for the purpose of attending. Mr. Robertson, of course, will be the Romeo of the cast. Charles Coghlan will play Mercutio, W. Dennis Tybalt, A. Grenville Paris, Nutcombe Gould Friar Laurence, Ian Robertson the apothecary and Dolores Drummond the nurse, The Shakesperian revival secms to ave seized upon other of the prominent London managers, and it {s now Inti- mated that both Mr. Willard and George Alexander have in contemplation pro- ductions of “Hamlet” In the near future. Arthur Nikiseh, formerly conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, has been appointed to succeed the veteran lerr Reinicke as conductor of the fa ous Gewandhaus concerts at Leipsic ta salary of 21,00) marks per annum. Miss Dorothea Baird, whom Mr. Tree as intrusted with the part of Trilby, as‘had a rapid and striking success as n actress. Indeed, so fas as experience jg0es, she is but a beginner on the stage. A little more than a year ago she had yet to make her debut, However, she had the good fortune to study under Mrs. Howson, and Ben Greet was one of the first managers to be attracted to her, He first saw her in an amateur Performance of “Galatea,” and soon had an opportunity of giving her a remark- able chance. This was at a Shakespear- ‘lan performance, when the leading ac- tress found it impossible to appear as Rosalind, The success which Miss Baird then scored was repeated in such parts as Biermione, Desdemonda and Pauline, The production of “Cheer, Boys, theer,” at Drury Lane, on Thursday ight, was a disappointment. The play hich was the joint work of Sir Augus- tus Harris, Henry Hamilton and Cecil yRaleigh, was handsomely mounted and costumed, but it was tediously long, lasting from 7.30 P. M. until midnight, The scene In Hyde Park, where real bonies lent by Lords Lovat and Bath- rst ard others disported, was greatly pplauded. Miss Wleanor Calhoun's t down asa success. BECAUSE OF A ROYAL OWNER. Col, North Credited with a Scheme to Make Ostend a Sport- ing Paradise. (Copyright, 1898, by the Associated Press.) LONDON, Sept. 21.—The International Yacht race controversy has hold its place as a topic of first interest with the London public during the paat week, With the publication of t spondence between the Earl of Lun- raven on one side and the Cup Com: | mittee of the New York Yacht Club and Mr. Iselin on the other, a decided ange of sentiment has come over English yachtsmen. ‘There is reason to believe that authori- ties on yachting are not all disposed to indorse the course that has been pur- sued by Lord Dunraven, The most s'g- nificant indication of this {s | Admiral Fitzgerald's letter to the Times to-day, condemning Lord Dunraven and prats- ing Mr. Iselin for his offer to resail the races, Equally significant is the fact that the Times gives Admiral Fitzger- ald's letter such prominence in its col- umns, It is now seems l.kely that the plan of ep Something approaching a turf scan- aunt of the ex- jorizel 11., owned by the ‘ceptances for the Cesarewitch Stakes © published 6 to 1 was freely taken on Florizel, One writer says that the only possible solution was a desire on the part of the handicappers to treat the Prince of Wales lentently, and that the horse would not have been thus favored if it had belonged to any one el King Leopold of Belgium has eold to Nitrate King,” a mile pald being $1,600,000 It is said that Col, North intends to found there an Inter- national sporting club, which will be a centre of horse racing, glove fighting and athletics generaily, with a theatre, gambling rooms, public gardens, &c. ‘The tract purchased begins just beyond the King's pavilion, Ostend already shares with Monte Carlo the reputation of being the fast- est place in all Europe. During the past Summer it has been visited by some of the most notorious gamblers and members of the demi-monde in Europe, but under the new aunpices it promises to eclipse all its previous gfforts, It Is sald that Max Lebaudy, who in- herited a fortune of $15,000,00 from his father, a sugar refiner, which he has been industriously trying to dissipate for some time, has fallen into the hands of the same English gang who preyed upon the late Squire Abingdon, —s LANDMARK’S FOAL PLATE.
