—s LONDONERS I FORM, The Visiting Athletes Working Hard at Berkeley Oval. How the English Team Trains for the International Games. ‘aree and a Half Hours’ Hard Ex- @rcise om the Track Each Day. the mentbers of the London Athletic ib team which came over here to ‘ide the question of euperiority be- + ten American and English amateur fetes. are down to hard work at Ir quarters at Berkeley Oval, with contest only three days awa his morning an “Evening World” vorter went to the training grounds fen tho sky was just tinted with the Ay of dawn, but there was no out- oor training this morning. As little ‘me as the athletes have before the reat event, and as much as they want to be in splendid condition, they would Not go through their paces on a day * when the thermometer was beneath the fifties and a cold wind swept over the field. Capt. Shaw, of the team, the man who hopes to carry away the gold Medal for the one-mile run, told the reporter all about the training. The athletes must rise at 7.30 o'clock, and then, after a cold bath, they rest for a short while and eat breakfast at 430 o'clock. Breakfast consists of steak or some other plain meat, fried potatoes, English breakfast tea and fruits. The athletes then have an hour to Me around and smoke. The allowance for smoking 1s one pipe after each meal, but very few of the men smoke up to the limit, A pint of beer is also al- lowed with each meal, but most of the athletes prefer ginger ale or other soft drinks. At 11 o'clock. Capt. Shaw calls Men out on the track, and then work commences. The sprinters who are entered for the 100 and 220 yard and quarter-mile dashes first do a few forty or fifty yard dashes in slow time, to make their limbs and sinews supple, and then they run three sixty-yard dashes at top speed from a Pistol start. It is usuai, but not compulsory, for the sprinters to take a long run around the oval track after they have done their regular work, but whether the: do this or not they must trot over 150 or 180 yards of the course. ‘This course of training must he begun the the Again at 6 o'clock in the afternoon * and must be continued until the pre- Paratory bell rings for dinner at 6,50 o'clock. Altogether the London men consume Just about three and a half hours in actual training. ‘They are permitted to use thelr own discretion regarding their retiring time, «but all of them are always in bed before 20 o'clock, Williams, Oakley, Johnson and Men- @elaon the high and long jump men, take t. . same exercise as the sprinters, only they vary it somewhat by doing a little—a very little—jumping In the after- noon work, They never jump their best, 1 they are afraid of straining before the race. Oakley and Williams are in the hur- dles, as well as in the jumping events, and they go over four-foot hurdles in the afternoon for a distance of about one-quarter mile. > BJ. Watson, the weight-putter, occu- training time in running and tossing a 15-pound shot around the grou The hammer throwers, Robert- gon and Johnson, are busy trying to Jearn how to throw the hammer from and turh in a 7-foot circle, which is the American allowance. In England the amateur hammer throwers are allowed @ %-foot circle and the English profes- sionals only throw from a ¥-foot circle, consequently the smaller allowance line is rather puzzling to the Britssh strong men. Capt, Shaw said that neither he nor his men could wish for any better training quarters than they have at Berkeley Oval. The ash track, he said, w. + Beautiful. In his opinion, the accommo- dations of the training quarters could not be surpassed. Even the weather has done tts best to help along the training of the Brit- {shers, for since their arrival there has been but one bad day. . At Travers Island ihe New York Ath- letlc Club men are working much hard- er than their English cousins, but the British form is as enthusiastic trainer could ask for. together the Britishera are a fine look- ing lot of men, avd when they march on the field next Saturday the Ameri cans will mect foemen who are worthy of their best efforts and talent. he track and infield at Manhattan Meld were given a final inspection yes- erday by Mr. B. At the Amateur, Athletic ‘Union's hampionships last Saturday there was yme complaint that the take-off for * ie high and broad, jumps was poor, lls was due to the “greenness” of the amway, the whole subsurface having pen removed and the top dressing not f@ying had the constant wetting and iling that the track had_ received.
