(Special to The Evening World.) RACE TRACK, SHEEFSHEAD BAY. June 15—The thoroughbreds that can- tered to the post when the bugle sounded for the first race to-day were not groomed any finer than the infleld and lawns of the most picturesque race track in America There was a touch of spick and span about everything. Fresh coats of paint for the stands, houses and rails, and evidences of the generous use of the mower and broom everywhere else. The weather was in keeping with the condition of the course. A brisk wind laden with the refreshing sting of the sea swept over the course and ren- dered the grand stand and shaded places as comfortable as the veranda of a summer hotel, The sun blazed down on the exposed infield, but only the old timers, accustomed to the biistards of Guttemburg or the annual coast at Churchill Downs, sought that or hugged the rail on the grand stand side of the track. Ten Tho md Early on Hand. There were almyet a@ many women ap men in the grand .tand, and they wore their nicest gowns, largest hats and contributed quite as much enthusiasm as a crowd of 50,000 men. Becond tier boxes, ranged after the style of the etand at Longchamps, where theGrand Prix of Paris is raced for, resembled a friese in Spring flowers, The prettiest women were there and the men looked up at them quite as often as they did at the racers in the circular chute that etretched a emooth, dull gray path through the green fields to the east and west. There was one drawback to the open- ing day of the Coney Island Jockey | Club and the day of days in the turf world. There was no music, the stew- arde of the Coney leland Jockey Ciub having decided by a majority of one that they could not afford a band. So a funeral silence hung over the track except for the babble of volc the calls of the barkers, the toot of cai whisties and the thundera of applau that emphasized the end of each race, The absence of music did detract a Uttle from the enjoyment of the day, be- cause one always associates the biggest sort of a band with the biggest but the proverbial good-nature of the American public was manifested by the fact that there wae not very much kick- ing about it, If the crowd was not @ record breaker in proportions, it was typically cosmo- politan in its make up. everybody who is anybody was in the grand stand or paddock, or loitering about the field.
