| | MAGISTRATES SWORN Mayor Strong’s New Appointees Take the Oath of Offica Mr. Kudlich, “Formerly of Ho- boeken,” Was Among the Number. Makes Affidavit That He Is Now a Resident of New York. Mr, Herman Kudlich, of Hoboken-New York, had an unpleasant half hour in the Mayor's office to-day. Mr. Kudlich, whose father was a notable fighter in the Aus- tro-Hungarian revolution, was appointed @ City Magistrate along with eight other rentiemen representing every branch of Politics except the Platt sort, and Mayor Wtrong sent word to him yesterday to come around to-day and be sworn in. In the mean time the newspapers dis- covered that Mr, Kudlich might not be @ligible to hold office because of the popular belief that he lived in Hoboken, N. J., and not in the Twelfth Ward in New York, as his friends said he did. When Mr. Kudiich appeared this morn- tng he brought his father along. His father lives over in Hoboken, and fought in the Austrian revolution. ‘The City Directory of the present year @nd some persons who know Mr. Kud- lich say Mr, Kudlich still lives in Ho- boken, and the Mayor had evidently mede up his mind to investigate Mr. Kudlich’s residence, and sent for Cor- poration Counsel Scott. Before the latter arrived, some of the ether new magistrates appeared, took the oath of office and were sworn in. Charles B. Simms, who is now a Police Justice and a Tammany man, wes the first to appear. He signed the appoint- ment register as living at 167 Alexander @venue, which is way up in what used to be the Annexed District. ‘Then came William C. Holbrook, of 10 West One Hundred and ‘hirtieth street. He {se a Republican and up to 11 o'clock was the only one of the new Judges of Special Sessions to appear. Then came Henry A. Brann, a Democrat, who lives at 827 Manhattan avenue. Leroy B, Crane, a Brookfleld sort of 8 Republican, and who gave his resi- dence as 123 East ith street, and Robert C. He gave his residence as 2% West Forty-fourth street. The new justices and magistrates will meet Monday or Tuesday to organize and themselves for taking hold of the courts over which they preside. Police Justice Simms, who is one of the new magistrates, will probably be elected resident of the magistrates, because of is previous experience. Applications for positions in new courts will be considered durine the week. ‘William J. Fanning, who was named for Ci trate, isn't sure that he wants the job. He asked the Mayor to give him a few days to consider the tter and the Mayor told him to de cide by Wednesday next.
