\ v FIREBUGS ARE AT IT AGAIN, Two More Attempts to Fire Houses in the Upper West Side District. SHAVINGS SOAKED WITH OIL. Landlord Harrie’s ‘Handy Man” Had Quit His Job Twelve Hours Before. POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR Him. Fire In a Coal Bin at 2270 Seventh Avenue Which the Police Insist Was Accidental. visited the t side district, this time in a place that threatened an en- tire block of tenement-houses, and when most of the inmates were asleep. Last night's blaze wan of the unex- plainable, suspicious character. It broke out in the cellar of house 99 Columbus avenue. That number is ex- actly in the centre on the block on the @ast side of the avenue, between One Hundred and Sixth and One Hundred and Seventh streets. The agent of the Property is Jacob Harris, who lives in the house mentioned, on the second floor, with his wife ang twenty-two- year-old son, His real estate office is n the corner of the block, The cellar is supplied with a number ef wood bins for the use of tenants, and every door is fastened with a pad-| lock, of which the tenants alone hold the key. Harris has @ bin larger than any of the others, which he uses as a workshop for hie employees. It is supplied with a atove, bench, and is filled with staves ani planking of various size. Having charge of all the houses in the block, a lot of carpentry work is perfected in the | Dasement of 919. Harris's “Handy Man.” Harris always has at least one man in his employment, a kind of a “handy man,” who not only looks after the necessary repairs to all the houses, but attends to tne cleaning up. He is gen- erally known by the name of janitor. Until yesterday morning the man so employed was known by the name of “Charlie.” Harris does not know his last name, nor does anybody else, He was picked up by Harris only two months ago. Yesterday morning, however, Charlie threw up his position and handed over ———— ‘to Harris the key to the cellar. That was at 4.90 o'clock. He remained about the vicinity until § o'clock in the after- noon, when he went downtown with one of the tenants. The latter parted with the man at 8 o'clock at Forty- Second street and Eighth avenue. It waa about 10.90 o'clock when the fire was discovered by Leo Ziegler, who has & Jewelry store in the basement. He saw smoke coming up through the cracks in the flooring. Instantly he ave the alarm to tenants, then turned back to gather his jewelry and watches together, which he put in the safe. The moment he gave the alarm, Philip Gelbie, on the be smashed in order to get inside, 2 Soaked with O11. opened a barrel, three feet high, filled almost to the top with shavings, was found to be abiase. The shavings on the top had been @oaked with kerosene, and the flames had leaped upward until they caught the celliny fire, anti the danger was over. ‘Then the police came and some time later, or at 2 A. M., a representative of Fire Marshal. The latter aroused the tenants and got the particulars, but what his conclusions were he refused to say. The Marshal as well the police certained from Harris that kerosene was used in quantities in the house. They were also told how it was pos- sible for the shavings to accumulate. They told of ariie’s leaving, but added that they did not hold him in the least responsible. Fire Marshal Mitchell said to-day that the fire was without doubt of incendiary origin. He for “Charlie. Another basement fire was discovered jt 8.35 this morning in the coal bin at 2270 Seventh avenue. C, L. Reede, who keeps a milk dairy on the ground floor, discovered smoke coming from the area. He rushed down into the cellar and found that a small blaze had started among some waste Paper and rubbish in the coal bin. He stamped out the flame with his feet and then poured a bucket of water over the ashes, When the firemen arrived there was nothing for them to do. The fire is sup- posed to have been started by the care- less dropping of a burning match by one of the tenants, who had been looking for some articles that had been stored away in the bin. The police of the West One Hundred ind Twenty-fifth street station say that the cellar fires that have occurred recently within this precinct, were caused by the accumulation of waste paper, which the Street-Cleaning Depart- ment has forbidden its men to accept with the ashes. Other F: A fire started yesterday morning in the cellar of a five-story flat at 2312 Seventh avenue, only three blocks from the acene of this morning's blaze. Fire started in the toreroom last night of the Broadway cable road power-house at Fifty-first street and Sixth avenue, Boys’ Clothing. Thursday Morning Sale, 8 A.
