sf HIS QUEER ACTIONS, Police Think Durant Murdered the San Francisco Girls. Medical Students Say He Was a Deceitful Gallant. Plenty of Circumstances That Bear Out the Theory of the Police. SAN FRANCISCO, Cal,, April 15.—The net is tightening around H. T. Du- rant, the dental student in murder of Blanene Lamont and Minnie ‘Williams, in Emmanuel Baptist Church. Chief of Police Crowley claims to ha evidence enough to convict him beyond any doubt. The body of Blanche Lamont, daugh- ter of a Montana banker, who had been living with relatives in this city and who had been missing since April 3, was found in the belfry of the Emmanuel Baptist Church yesterday by Detective Gibson, The murder of Miss Minnie Willams in the Mbrary of this church yesterday created great excitement and any amount of speculation as to who was the murderer, as wel! as what connec- tlon could possibly be traced between the disappearance of Miss Lamont and the murder of Misa Williams, as they Were known to be bosom companions. It was remembered that Theodore Du- rant was friendly to Miss Lamont, and that he was seen talking to Miss Will- jams on the evening before the murder. Durant is now in custody. The findin, of the body of Miss Williams denot that a terrible struggle had taken place, and the mutilation of her body with an Ofdinary jtable-knife, recalls the ‘vork of the Ripper.” nt had been attentive to both girls. Each regarded him as a lover. They were friends and belonged to the same cli in Sunday-school. The youn, Ubrarian of the church and school. e and carried one of the few keys to its private door. Miss Williams, who wan to have gone to Dr. Vogel's Friday evening, started for the house, met Durant and was Hever seen <ilive afterwards. The sleeve of a man’s white shirt rolled up in a wad as though It had been stripped off the arm was found. It was soiled @nd had blood stains on it, but they were old. An old rusty hatchet that the sexton used for chopping wood, and which he had missed for v found in the belfry, but {t bore no signs of use, The girl had died of strangula- ton. ‘The finding of the axe ig a cir- cumatance that will be followed up by the detectives. As to Dur "# reputation as a plous youth of cort habits, there Is anoth aide to the story. Brom the und raduates at the medical college where urant Was also a student a different opinion has been obtained. ‘They con- sidered him hypocritical and deceitful, posing before his fellows as a gallant and before his church friends as a saint, He often boasted to the students of having received favors from women, On one occasion, Durant told his friends yhich he sald he Carson City company with three railroad employees. He told of brutal treatnent to Indian Jromen. in which Ne wok part, and of indulgence in “menduality, Great importance attaches to Durant’s acts since the disa| arance of Blanche Lamont. His companions at the medical college deciare that he han not attended @ lecture since the day Blanche Lamont isappeared. When his name was called by the instructors in charge his friends would answer for him. EASTER WEDDING BELLS. Many Happy Couples Launched on the Sea of Matrimony.
