ALBANY, Jan. 30.--Brooklyn {s not to be Lexowed after all. Mayor Schieren, who asked for his opinion as to the necessity for @ legislative inquiry into the affairs of the city, has written a letter to Chair- man Ainsworth, of the Assembly Com- mittee on Ways and Means, in which he says that an investigating committee is Rot necessary, although he admits that there are a great many things relating to previous administrations that he would like to find out about. ‘The Mayor was asked if he approved of Assemblyman Wray's resolution, pro- viding for the appointment of an Inves- tigating Committee, and it was gener- % ally understood that his ylews would govern the action of the Assembly on the resolution. As the Mayor does not approve of it. it will probably be ad- Yersely reported. ALBANY, Jan. %.—When the Senate met this morning, Mr. Edmund O'Con- nor, who represents a country district somwhere up. the State, moved that the rule relating to persons entitled to the privileges of the Senate Chamber be religiously enforced, so as to include newspaper reporters, He said the re- porters interfered with the deliberations ‘of the Senate. His motion was vigorously opposed by Benators Cantor, Guy and Sullivan, who informed Senator O'Connor in mast vig: orous English that the newspaper re porters were quite as important in the public aye as the Senator himself. Mr. O'Connor's motion finally went over without action, although the at- tendants of the Senate were instructed not to permit reporters to disturb the sanctity of the statesmen while the Benate was in session. Senator “Tim” Sullivan made a mo- tion, which he afterwards withdrew. that the newspaper reporters be pro- tected against the Senators. (eS AFTER THE RAILROADS. ALBANY, Jan, 90.—The Lexow Com- mittee hi taken an adjournment until next Wednesday, when the three police bills of Senator Lexow will be given a hearing. The hearing was set for 2 o'clock to~ but owing tothe dissatisfaction expressed owing to the dissatisfaction expressed by Dr. Parkhurst and members of the Committee of Seventy over the short time allowed them for preparation to Present arguments against the biils, the adjournment was ordered. ‘The hearing was uot decided upon until Boss Platt came to Albany on Mon- day, and then hurried notices were sent to Dr. Parkhurst and the other reform- ers that they sight come up to Albany to-day and deliver their opinions on the bills. Senator Lexow said shortly after the Senate met that he would probably move for a postponement of the hearing. He penten his respects to Dr. Park- Hurst and the Committee of Seventy: Why talk about Thomas Platt being the boss of New York? He is not in it with these people. They pretend to represent the people of New York City in everything and without consulting them, Dr, Parkhurst's letter does not aurprise me. After his exhibition In Chicago I shall not be surprised at any- thing he doe “I note with interest that he gave his letter addressed to my committee to the newspapers before he sent It ‘That does not surprise me.” Senator Lexow made planation on concerning the action of his committee ‘in setting the public hearing on his Police bill for this afternoon, He said notice was given more than two weeks 0 that such a hearing would be grant- |, although the date was not fixed. Ife was of the opinion that Dr, Park- hurst_ and other New York reformers who desired to be heard on the bill had been given ample tme in which to pre- pare themselves, The Senator said he was willing to concede any reasonable demand, but he did not think that a postponement of the hearing was justi- led. He called attention to Dr. Park- hurst’s letter in the newspapers, and | pronounced it to be emphatic. ‘The Senator declared mont vigorously that ke wauld not be incited by any man, “whether he was the uncrowned King of New York City, as Dr. Park- hurst evidently belleves ‘himeelf to be, jor a private citizen.” ‘The Senator sald afterwards that the hearing would F dperay fo on at 2 o'clock, but as far as he had been in- formed Charles T. The letter is a follows: “As Tepresenting the people of this city, with whose sentiments upon the Present situation we are thoroughly conversant, we desire courteously, but indignantly, to protest against the pre- cipitancy “with which you propose to crowd through the police bills now under consideration You are certainly aware of the intense concern which this city feels in the matter, and of the ar- rangements that are how being made to give the public an opportunity to voice itself next Monday evening, and the Phenomenal haste with which you are acting Is easily producing here the con- viction that you are afraid to face the expression of the popular judement. ‘We demund that free and ample time be given to make known at Albany the popular (ucemene of this city, an to present bills, now in course of prepa- jration, embodying our views. Morton to Make a Thor. ough Examination of the Elmira Reformatory 1S TO FILL TWO YAGANCIES, Flower's Reappointment of Rath- bone and Swartwood Was Ignored. (Special to the Evening World.) ALBANY, Jan. %.—Gov. Morton, in deference to numerous requests, will make a thorough examination of the Elmira Reformatory before appointing two gentlemen to fill the vacancies in the Board of Managers, and it is not improbable that the recent Investiga- tions of Paddler Brockway's conduct of that institution will be gone over again. Indeed, it is sald, that the Governor has already devoted considerable time toa an examination of the affairs of Brockway and the prison he supervises, and his selection of men to fill existing vacancies will indicate hie attitude on the demands of humane persons to re- open the whitewashing inquiry of last Summer. The Governor sald Inst night that he had not made up his mind regarding the vacagcies, although the names of four gentlemen had been handed to him as suitable for manager The Governor further sald that he would proceed slowly in the matter, as the friends of both sides of the controversy were equally sincere in their claims and are entitled to consideration, The names of the four gentlemen sent the Governor, with the recommendation thi two of them be appointed to fill the vacancies in the Board of Managers, are Judge Dexter, of Elmira, and Chas. | eq T. Willis, of Rochester, who are urged by the friends of Brockway, and Lawyer A. J. Robertson, of Buffalo, and Isaac Gibbard, of Rochester. Judge Dexter and Mr. Willis are sald to be extremely friendly to Brockway, and would In no wise change the com- plexion of the Board in its relation to him. He would, in the event of their appointment, it is believed, be ae firmly rotected and indorsed as under the old joard, of which Messrs. Rathbone and Swartwood, whom Gov. Morton has re- fused to reappoint, were members. Among the lust’ acts of Gov. Flower, who assisted tn the whitewashing of Brockway, was reappoint. Messrs, Rathbone’ and Swartwood. Their ap- ointments were made under the recess rules, with the understanding that if Gov, ‘Morton approved of them he would send thelr names to the Senate for con- firmation within twenty days. The Governor, for reasons best known to himself, but in accord with the wishes of impartial men of influence, did not send in the names within the stipulated time, and ree to act as though een mi settled fact that he names of Messrs.
