Mayor Bchieren, of Brooklyn, sent his {annual message to the Board of Alder- gen to-day. It ts to the point and will {Interest taxpayers, inasmuch as it shows that under the present adminis- tration all the departments in the city _ government have been operated as “economically as possible, with the re- sult that taxes may be lower next year than they are now. Among the first things the Mayor mentions is the improved condition of the drinking water, showing that the City Works Department heeded the Warning of “The Evening World," which @bout a year ago illustrated the de- plorable condition of the water-shed ‘At the time “The Evening World’ ob- tained samples of the drinking water @t various ponds from which the Rrook- yn supply was drawn, and analysis by the health authorities in New York ELD UP AT POINT OF PISTOL, Bold Daylight Robbery on a Crowded Brooklyn Street. Two Men Rob a Store and Sertously Injure Its Owners. Jamex Murphy and Joseph Clarke were held in the Lee Avenue Court, Willlams- burg, to-day for a daring daylight rob- bery, At 9.9 this morning the men entered the fruit store of Antonio Napole, at 231 Bedford avenue. apole was alone. Clarke drew a revolver ant commanded the proprietor to throw up his hands, Napole did so. Murphy walked be hind the counter and took $18 from the tll, Clarke keeping the ItaJan covered with the pistol As the men started out Napol screamed for help. ‘The men ran back into the place, and Clarke cracked him over the head’ with the butt of the te Volver and Murphy struck him with a billet of wood. Had it not been for Officer James Short, of the Charitles Department, men ‘might have escaped, despite” the fact that the robbery) was) ocmmitted on a busy thoroughfare. Short, however, saw the men coming out of the place, and noticed Clarke stowing # revolver In his pocket, When the officer arked for Information the men started down the street on a run They were captured after a chase of two blocks. Napole was severely hurt, and was un- @howed that the water sampled con- tained sewage. It was also shown that ‘eemeteries and towns drained Into some ef these ponds. {The Mayor says that “the quality of the water in the ponds was carefully watched, and through the co-operation of the Health Commissioner, autnority was secured from the State Board of Health to prevent or remove possil @curces of pollution to the water sup- ply. “Consequently, Brook:yn enjoys now the Best, water of any large city in the Scene iret part of the ;message, staler e year bonds to the amoun be as Were sold, aggregating In $27,441.80, ‘The large number bonds issued, the Mayor says, pe tanunces of the cliy clone to the per cent. limit of the assessed value Poa eotate in the twenty elgnt wards jebt, however, he thinks, will be tly reduced during the’ present ee by several large payments of tax speaking of the Fire Department aay or calls attention to the detec: = water {tupply, ‘and cltes the Taber- Se and Hote, Regent fire last May.
