CHOICE, [Who'll Lend HE STAR today addresses an open y letter to these Washington senators and congressmen: SENATOR WESLEY L. JONES SENATOR C. C, DILL HON. ALBERT JOHNSON HON. BEN HILL HON. JOHN F. MILLER HON. LINDLEY H. HADLEY HON. JOHN W. SUMMERS Miss Winifred Gemmel, University of Washington girl student, died from a bullet wound December 10. Her family said it was an accident. Police said it was suicide. Whatever it was, IT COULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED IF SHE HADN’T HAD A GUN! At a Thanksgiving party, Dr. Albert F. Mattice, prominent Seattle physician, was killed by a gun iv his own hand. His family scouted the police suicide theory and called it an accident. Whatever it was, IT COULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED IF HE HADN’T HAD A GUN! In Seattle alone nearly 100 persons have been shot since the first of the year, according to Police Inspector Harry O’Brien. IF THE GUNS HADN’T BEEN THERE, IT WOULDN’T HAVE ‘HAP- PENED! It is up to you gentlemen, The Star thinks, to stop the promiscuous sale of revolvers to Seattle folks and to other Washingtonians. You can lessen our suicides! You can lessen our accidental shoot- ings! You can lessen our murders! Let us tell you how: Few of these suicide and murder guns are purchased in Seattle. A city law, rigidly enforced, provides that a citizen must obtain a police permit before a dealer will sell him a revolver. To get this permit, he must explain to the satis- faction of the police pawnshop squad his need for such a weapon. “Never since the permit system went into effect have we found a single re- volver purchased under it on any holdup man or gunman who was brought in,” says Detective Lieutenant William G. Witzke, in charge of the pawnshop de- tail. But— There is no law to prevent any citizen of Seattle, reputable or otherwise, from ordering a revolver from some Eastern dealer and having it shipped to him by mail. There is no law preventing any man, reputable or otherwise, living outside of Seattle, from having a revolver shipped to him thru the mails by Seattle dealers. A city permit law to curb the purchase of weapons will be a farce in Seattle and in every other city as long as Uncle Sam’s mails are open for the shipment of firearms. That is plugged. That’s your job, gentlemen! Seattle—and Washington—want fed- eral legislation that will prevent sui- cides, gunmen and murderers from get- ting their weapons of death by mail or express. where the hole must be And we look to you gentlemen to give it to us!
