a PAGE 4 THE SEATTLE STAR WEDNESDAY OCTOBER g 19%, | Stem the Tidal Waves’ i Will You Help Protect Your Own ~ | Family and Community? WEDNI A Inst un NO! (This advertisement made pom Generosity of friends of the Conwunity Mund) “Yes, the Community Fund is a good thing—but why should I worry about it? I’m not rich—I’m no philan- thropist,” you say. ‘‘Of course Seattle is a pleasanter city to live in because all this welfare work is going on. I suppose there are fewer panhandlers, less misery —but how does that affect me and my family?”’ If that’s the way you have been reasoning,— If that sort of results is all you have been expect- ing of the fund—then learn something for your own good. As tidal waves sweep irresistibly, engulfing all in their path—so will the tidal waves of disease, crime, illiteracy, misery and other enemies of society swallow up every quarter of this city—unless held in check. You and your family cannot escape. What the fund does—and IS the Fund’s biggest job and its greatest good, is to build stronger and yet stronger breakwaters to stop the rush of these tidal waves of disease and distress, preventing the sweeping of these floods which all Seattle could not stem once they were upon us, but which we all can and do prevent by supporting the Community Fund. When you subscribe to the Community Fund you are not necessarily giving to charity—you are pro- tecting and insuring yourself and your family. You are building up a welfare wall--a bulwark against the inroads of ignorance, crime, disease and other dangers to the community and the individual. Fifty agencies and institutions are doing this valua- ble work for you. Are you willing to get out and undertake this task—or will you pay your just share of the bill and let those who, by training and experience, are well fitted, continue to protect you? Things to Know: You may distribute your subscription over a 4 ; period of several months. The Community Fund is shared by all races, creeds and denominations. One big reason for the Commu- nity Fund is that it practically eliminates free-for-all soliciting and tag days for all sorts of charities and does more work per dollar. Contrast your Community Fund, which will take only 21% cents of each dollar collected, for expenses, with the old methods which took from 25 to 40 cents of every dollar collected by constant begging. Solicitors for the Community Fund are volunteers—none receives a salary or commission. This leaves a larger amount going directly into welfare work for which it is intended. ~ of Her Own.” Seattle Community 4466 Stuart Building Sorrow, disease, vice—these are the unlovely things you fight with the most effective weapons known when you subscribe to the Community Fund. You do relief work—relieving and providing a new chance for thousands of unfortunates. But the greatest work you do is that of prevention, Remember, also, that in this task of prevention should be considered the character-building work done by Community Fund Institutions. Lives di- verted from idle shiftlessness to useful citizenshi from indolence and dependence to industry an self-respect; from paths that lead toward crim ways that make for decency—these things really count for more worth-while accomplishme than the work of prevention, which affects the physical side of life. Consider the summer camps, medical clinics, se tlement houses, Americanization classes, whol some recreation centers and all those agenci that teach respect for our homes and institutio Study these and you will find records of accon plishment worth thousands of dollars to Seattle every individual in it.
