A survey shows that Seattle is sixth city in the United States in hotel accommodations, though twentieth in population. Only New York, Chicago and three others exceed Seattle. This fact few Seattle people have realized, and so have unwittingly lent themselves to the spread of unfounded reports that are reacting seriously upon hotels, business houses, upon the city itself, and upon many of those planning to yisit Seattle during the summer season, Seattle has many excellent, well-kept and well-located hotels, whose names have not all become familiar to the general public, but which for years have been helping to take care of Seattle's tens of thousands of visitors. There are over 12,000 rooms in Seattle’s hotels today—more than may be found in several Amer- ican cities double and treble the size of Seattle. During all last summer, when Seattle entertained the great- est crowds of tourists in history, save possibly in the exposition year, there was only one week—that of “The Wayfarer’—when .all hotels were well filled. During most of the season the occupancy averaged about 70%. This year the only week when the hotels are again likely to be comfortably filled is that of “Americanus,” President Harding’s return and the Pacific Northwest Merchants’ Exposition, Even then preparations are so ample and the interchange of courtesies among hotels so efficiently worked out, that no one need fear serious inconvenience, In the interest of fairness to the city that is our home; in the interest of the business houses of Seattle that are suffering as a result of these harmful repor in fairness to the hotels of Seattle and in fairness to the many travelers who fear inconvenience and difficulty of obtaining accommodations, we urge Seattle people to broadcast word that Seattle is ready and anxious to welcome all the visitors, Seattle, since the days of the Klondike rush, has taken care of large numbers of transients and visitors constantly within her gates, and so has gained a widespread reputation for hospitality, The hotel men of Seattle pledge themselves to maintain this splendid reputation, built up through all these years, and they urge Seattle residents to do their best in correcting false impressions that today are working to the detriment of the city and her people.
