Sundays | FOLEY’S |slough, Upper Mercer slough and It went on this way for about a| year, when Captain Anderson de clared that he had already saved | $10,000 on the change because he had dropped Bellevue out of the ferry service. Instead, the change made several hundred dollars more expense a month, besides retarding | the developments of the county, giv-| ing the chief patrons the poorest service. Recently the boat service has been taken away from Bellevue entirely, leaving a community of thousands of people without water transporta- | tion, Not only Bellevue is suffering | from this abominable service, but| the whole east side. The loggedoff land that could be developed into fine garden tracts and fruit orchards lies east of Bellevue dock, an arva of 32 square miles, including Mercer Bellevue Gardens, with numerous settlements in Bellevue district. By runging the ferry to Bellevue dock it brings the settlers within walking distance of these beautiful garden tracts, with their fertile soll. As it is, no one will go out and work this land. This makes a loss to the coun- ty im the way of taxation, Which ts the best for the county, to pay 0c ap re or $6 an acre in taxation? Mr. Taxpayer, do not be mistaken. The east side residents are paying their share of the taxes, and we are not complaining, but we do want the kind of service we are entitied to. ‘The tax valuation of the property on} the east side, affected by the ferry | transportation, has increased 80 per} cent since the bullding of the ferry | Leschi, but as it is now we have high | taxes and no service. Tho bus serv. | ice that Captain Anderson has estab- lished is a menace to’ the country and no asset. Last summer a visitor from the East came out to Midlakes, which is | a little less than one and one-half miles from Bellevue postoffice. The bus driver told ber it was cht | miles to Midlakes from Bellevue and that it would cost $1.50.
