Vast Dope Shipments Sent Thru This Port In a booklet on “Opium, a World Menace,” just received here, Joseph C. Pelletier, of Boston, district attorney of Suffolk county, Mass., charges: “The production, sale and use of drugs goes merrily on and the world seems indifferent. We try to protect our own citizens, and yet allow enough morphine and opium to be shipped from Seattle in five months to give a dose to each of the 400,000,000 men, women and children of China, “This country is said to use about 35 times as much morphine as is required for legitimate medical purposes. During the first 10 months of 1919 the United States im- ported 250 tons of crude opium—enough to produce 35 tons of morphine. “One ton would be sufficient for the medical needs of America from Alaska to Patagonia.
