Tanered of Kent, owners of the champion egg producing pen of five 8. C. W. Leg horn pullets. ¥ COAST SOURCE OF WINTER EGGS Poultrymen everywhere are ginning to concede that the Pacific} Coast always will be the source of} ly of winter eggs in the United States. There are two great egg centers on the West coast, Petaluma in Cali fornia, and Puget Sound in Wash ington. And the northefn district is destined to be the greatest of 2 according to Mr, Tancred. Puget Sound offers natural advantages to poultrymen that cannot be dupli-| cated. r “California has seven dry months,” said Mr. Tancred. “This is more trying on poultry than our wet| weather. They go at it more on a wholesale basis down there. A man| acquires a lurge flock and gives the birds ag Httle attention as possible. He depends on quantity, not qualtty They have @ general cleanup once @ year. Some of the fussy fellows clean out their pens and buildings as often ag twice annually, Because of the warm, dry weather they give| little attention to buildings. The) winter rains here compel us to erect | modern buildings. Dry comfortable | buildings cost more and because of | this extra expense we must give our plants much more attention. A& a Fesult of this care we build up the quality of our birds, We couldn't! afford to keep fowls of the California | grade. Thousands of baby chicks are} imported from California every year, | and it is a noticeable fact that those poultrymen who go ‘broke’ are the Ones who imported Petaluma stock. “The East demands Washington | exes for the same reason that it| insists on Washington apples. The same extreme care ie used here tn packing eggs as in packing fruit. Washington eggs bring a higher price in New York city than fancy Eastern stock. They have whole. saled there at ax high as $1 per| dozen.” The name of Tancred is to the Northwest poultry industry what Burbank is to the*fruit industry. For nearly 20 years Mr. and Mra Tancred have been building up their | birds. Their sfock has been sought in practically every state In the Union. Their pens have established egelaying records year after year. Mr. and Mra. Tanered just “drifted into the business." Today they have one of the most successful plants in the country. They have a 25-acre ranch on the hill east of Kent. The! poultry plant occupies 10 acres, five| acres are planted to kale for feed-| ing and the remaining 10 acres con-| mist of pasture and crops. They have 8,000 birds, of @bich 6,000 are under trap nest.
