Haanstra, 32, overseas veteran of the world war, was in federal cus- tedy Monday pending the outcome of removal hearing before United States Commissioner IK. W, McClel- land. Final hearing ts set for Octo ber 20. Haanstra owas arrested = last ‘Wednerday at Kalama upon informa- tion furnished by local postoffice in- apectors. He was brought to Seattle and lodged in the county jail, his capture being kept secret. In the meantime all efforts to secure @ con- fession of guilt are said to have failed. Haanstra bad in his | possession when arrested, according to Post: office Inspector J. 8. Swenson, $1,150 in bills, for which he was. unable to give a satisfactory account. The mail robbery was at the time attributed to Harry Gardner, now fugitive from McNeil island pentten- tiary, and Haanstra is suspected of being a partner of Gardner's, Haanstra gives his occupation automobile dealer, He is said to have formerly worked as mail piler in Oakland, Cal.
