ING county's auto expense has jumped from $23,910 in 1914 to $95,879 in 1920, That is—seemingly. But $95,000 is by no means the aggregate of the coun- ty’s auto operation. This is the cost of the operation of the garage; the purchasing of tires, parts, gas and oil, in part; and the purchase of two or three new cars, mak- ing no allowance for trades-in, This figure does not include the maintenance, repairs, |] and operation of numerous trucks and autos that are used in road work and other lines that keep them away from the city most of the time. It does not include the depre- ciation of the numerous cars that the county owns and this is an item that no business concern would pmit. King county maintains 73 automobiles (some of them privately owned) and 6 motorcycles. The county owns 45 automobiles and 6 motorcycles, valued at approximately $85,000. This includes trucks. A county official familiar with the county’s auto record gives five years as the average life of a machine. In other words, he places depreciation at 20 per cent. Hidden in the appropriations to road districts are thou- sands of dollars that are used for auto purposes. About 27 autos and trucks are maintained out of this fund. Oc- casionally one of these machines is repaired at the coun- ty garage, but it is the exception. It is consegvatively estimated that this hidden auto and truck maintenance and repairs is greater than the similar expense of all other county machines. beh teed. cad An Unusual Parchase of 300 Percale Aprons 89c Choice at Medium and Large Sizes Sales Booth—Upper Main Floor This group of neat house aprons consists of Percales in fancy stripes, plaids and checks in both light and dark colors. This is only one example of the cost to the county. The treasurer has a machine on the county expense list and so has the auditor and others, none of whom has noticeable official use for a machine. Of course, it is fine to have a machine to use when the county foots the bills! The county maintains Commissioner Ramsay’s Buick, which is used as a family car. Commissioners Dobson and Smith are provided cars by the county. Mr. Smith generally leaves his machine in the county garage except when needed in his district, but Mr. Dobson keeps his close . at hand as a rule. | - - Here is a new shipment of Wool Middy Sweaters that are ideal Two hundred thousand dollars is lots of money to spend | tor schoolgirl and college mies.
