National Thrift Week JANUARY 17-23 Are You Successful? Apply This Test NOW! There are hundreds of men right here in Seattle who call themselves “successful.” Perhaps you, too, cherish a similar thought about yourself. Wouldn’t you like to apply a test that would enable you to know for sure—some simple test that would only require but a second or so of your time? Here it is then—the very same test that Jim Hill, the Empire Builder, once flung at a man who had asked him what constituted success: “How much money have you saved up?” History does not tell what the reply was, but it does tell us what test we can apply, namely, “How much money have you saved up?” How much money have YOU saved up, young man or young woman? If you have learned the wisdom of thrift and have a growing bank account, then of a certainty you can call yourself a success. But, on the other hand, if you have saved nothing, then it is equally certain that you are a failure and a rank one! The physically-fit man, who in normal times cannot earn a living for himself, is something less than a man. But the man who can earn a living for himself, yet who is unwilling to lay something aside for the future, is in reality little better than an ignorant savage. Elbert Hubbard said that the habit of thrift proves one’s power to rule his own psychic soul. Without this habit no man can honestly call himself the captain of his soul—the master of his own destiny. Thrift is a habit. A habit is something done uncon- sciously and without thought. This very day learn to make thrift the ruling habit of your life. Learn to do this if you really want to be successful. Save money! It doesn’t matter how little, just so you save some. Put it in a safe place, beyond the reach of sudden temptation. Each week add a little more to it. Keep this up week after week, and then when adversity or oppor- tunity knocks at your door you will be fully prepared. Any one of the banks whose signatures follow will gladly help you save—will gladly help you become successful.
