* PAGE 12 COAL PRICE CLIMBS; ALL ELSE DROPS : Both Soft and Hard Coal Costs More in Past 11 Months AVERAGE RETAIL COAL PRICES wv 21 PRINCIPAL CITIES Prices have been dropping on Majority of commodities, retail prices ef coal—anthracite and bituminous have advanced. ‘The increase in retail coal prices in @1 principal cities of the United States between January and Decem ber, 3920, averaged 20 to 35 per cent Only a few cities near coal fields re) decreases, and these were Ported alight. ‘The average retail price of Penn sytvania anthracite stove coal in the Zi cities on January 15, 1929, $12.28 a ton. On September 15 the , average had risen to $16.48, and on December 15 to $16.88. The increane for the 11 months was 31 per cent on this grade of coal. Chestnut anthracite coal showed @ similar rise, from $12.69 a ton aver on January 15 to $16.55 on De cember 15, or 20.4 per cent. Biturninous coal—the prices of the Various grades offered for domestic use being averaged-—shows an in- crease from $9.24 a ton in January to $12.53 per ton in December, or 25 per cent. Cost of producing and transporting oat has increased during the year. On April 1 the bituminous opera tors and miners signed an agreement giving the miners increased pay av @raging 27 per cent. On April 12 the new and increased railroad rates went into effect. On September 3 a new two-year wage agreement between anthracite miners and operators was signed.
