FOR WOMEN | ON FARMS Uncle Sam Makes Drive to Make Things More Com- fortable for Them WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 — “Man works from sun to sun, but woman's ! | | grork is never done.” | Uncle Sam wants to take the sting eut of those familiar lines, as they) ty to farmers’ wives. “The United States department of agriculture has made a farm-home) survey, covering 10,015 farm homes tn the 33 northern and western states. And its deduction from this survey is just this-—that the waste of woman-power is one of the greatest menaces to the rurhl life of the nation. KEMEDY IS MODERN EQUIPMENT Efficient planning and welldirect:| ed investment in modern equipment} for farm homes is the remedy point ed out by Miss Florence BE. Ward, | who directed the survey. Miss Ward ts in charge of extension work with women, office of extension work. North and West, states relations service. “At a time like this,” she says, | “when the dearth of farm labor i» & limiting factor in production, it ts very doubtful business policy for farmers to use increased income to} buy more land instead of using @ part of it in raising standards of living so that women and young People will not want to go to the cities in search of attractive living| conditions ang amusement.” Labor-saving appliances in they home as well as in the field, the re- Port points out, would give women a chance they now lose, to realize the genuine compensations of fife in the] open country. And 87 out of each 100 women have) ti, Half of them are up and at work at 5 o'clock in the morning. Forty per cent have water tn the kitchen, but the others must go to the spring or pump, at an average distance of 40 feet from the kitchen, | to bring water for cooking break fast. Eightyone per cent must feed) ; the poultry—but only 16 per cent have the egg money for their per sonal use. It falls to 36 per cent to. help milk the cows, 25 per cent to help care for the livestock, and 24 Per cent to spend an average of six ‘weeks assisting in field work. Yet only 12 per cent of the women have asxistants, and these only for about three and one-half months of the year. : On the average, the farm. woman has a seven-room house to keep in| order. Kerosene lamps must be trimmed and filled by 79 per cent;| 96 per cent do the family washing:| 94 per cent bake all or part of the Dread used and 60 per cent make the| butter. Only 26 per cent have gas or electric irons.
