Dr H.U.ROGERS Optom trist *** concerning war-time GF. CLARK Gil tJ FORREST | WHITTY Branch at Georgetown MAX G. SCHMIDT Main Bank 00 Second JAMES La iE JAMFS D Asc 0. W A Cs and Branches patents Numerous inventions produced by Uncle Sam's staff, under stress of war need, will contribute in many instances, according to an authoritative journal, to quicken and cheapen processes of manufacture in a wide range of industries. Illustrative of these net gains from the war are the new styles of kilns for wood. Ordinarily, in this coun- try, oak and other stock for manufactures, such as vehicles, was air dried, requiring a period of from two to three years. Experts of the United States forest service invented kilns and evolved improvements in the process that bid fair to revolutionize drying practice. By the use of the new equipment oak can be dried with a much smaller per- centage of loss in kilns than in the open air, and the period of drying reduced from two to three years to two to three months. Other patents cover a gravity fruit separ- ator, processes for the preservation of fruit juices, an ingenious sirup evaporator, a new leavening agent, a simpler acetylene generator for traveling photographic work rooms, a proposed standard for dry cells, a new type of porcelain for spark plugs, an airplane camera, nonshatterable glass, vari- ous protective coatings for inside and out- side surfaces and so-called “dopes” for air- plane wings. Merely to catalogue pulp and paper innovations would require a great deal of space. The strongest paper ever de- vised has been developed by Uncle Sam, and real progress has been made in the evo- lution of waterproof fiber containers. It may prove decidedly worth while for every man- ufacturer to inquire of departments at Washington, D. C., what new industrial and scientific assets have accumulated that might prove of service in his line. Re Member Federal Reserve Bank D HOGE A. B. STEWART Vice-President EB. ANSLEY Asst.
