FRENCH TOWNS GIVEN MEDALS Decorations for Bravery in War Awarded BY CARL A, RANDAU (United Press Staff Correspondent) PARIS, July 21.—(By Mail.)—Hasa city personality? Can a town be brave? The French government has answered these, questions in the uaf- firmative. France has rewarded a number of towns and cities for their bravery during the present and former wars Paris itself has recently been grant ed the Croix de Guerre. Now the town of Bitche, out in Alsace-Lor- raine, has been added to the list of the brave by being cited for the Cross of the Legion of Honor, the present reward being rade for the town's service nearly 60 years ago, before it was torn away from France. The first recognition of the bray. ery of cities was recorded in 1815, when Napoleon, during the Hundred Days, issued a decree authorizing the cities of Chalons-sur-Soane, Tournus and St. Jean-de-Losne to place the Eagle of the Legion of Honor on the coatof-atms of the three communi ties for their brave conduct in 1814. Until 1864 no more cities were ac- corded war honors, Then in that year Roanne was decorated. After 1870 the list became longer and in cluded successively Chateaudun, Bel- fort, Rambervillers, St. Quentin, Di- jon, Paris, Bazellies, Lille, Vallen. ciennes, Landreche, St. Dizier and Peronne, In 1916 the historic city of Verdun was added to the list of Le- | SOME OF THESE HAD | VERY LOVELY JOBS |_ LONDON, July 21.—(By Mail.)— | Thirteen clerks to deal with an aver- |age of 40 letters a day, were among \the discoveries made by Sir John | Bradbury's parliamentary committee, |inquiring into the over-staffing of |sovernment departments. The enor- |mous staffs gathered by the various departments during the war became such a scandal that the Bradbury committee was appointed, and even after scared officials had had time to clear out many of the “unnecessary ornaments,” there are still plenty of “limpets” holding on to soft jobs.
