Ananias Would Blush If He Ever Dropped in on City Police Court “De you solmenly swear that | | You will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, | | 80 help you God?” “I do.” BY THE POLICE REPORTER An oath is a joke in the police court of the city of Seattle, Perjury, a crime punishable with ® penitentiary sentence, happens ms of times .a day. ‘ve Seen men, women and chil Mm calmly raise their right hands, © the oath administered by Po: Judge John B. Gordon, then Imiy sit down and lie, Lies fill the air every day—lies hat every hanger-on and court of: ficer KNOWS are les—and the , Strangest feature of the whole mess * ts that nobody seems to care. Tt’s a curious study, this labyrinth of lies. + During the past ten years Tive attended several thousand police court trials—it was my business, Show Up Ananias ‘ve heard Judge Gordon pass on high as 165 cases, ranging from a common drunk to wife-beating, In a single short day, And I think I'm Safe in saying that I heard 150 out ‘of the 165 raise their right hands to God and Tie their heads off. I've heard policemen lie when the fellow behind the tron rail was tell- ing the truth. T've heard these same policemen Me and put in a good word for some Poor devil who, they knew, had brok- en the law. Tve seen whole neighborhoods file nto court over a chicken case, and Tive seen witness after witness sink into a chair and tie with an assur- ‘ance that would make Baron Munch- @lsen look like an innocent babe. If Ananias ever invades the po- Tice court of ‘Seattle, he will look like George Washington. __ Leng has it been an axiom in Se- _ attle'’s underworld that you can't get a square real in police court. That statement should be taken With several grains.of salt. ‘One day I met a young fellow d used to give Seattle policemen lot of trouble. He was a “bad ‘es Incidentally, he has straight- up, owns his own home, is Married and all that. “Member the time I walloped that copper with a club?” he asked. Story He Told remembered. The cop was in hospital six weeks, while the n was combed for “the blankety Mlank that pretty near croaked the bull,” as one policeman phrased It. iy Finally they got him and—weil, " ‘let him tell it—and I know he told the? trath: “The bull comes up to a dance. He it in for me, see? Without aw he grabs me, and it's a quick rush to the door for me. fm sore, of course, and I picks up the first thing I gee hold of and Jets him have it. He had no bust- ow PT ] P*\ ness monkeying with me—I ain't never done him no harm. Well, after they arrest me—say, the way _ Pjwas ‘framed’ was the Itmit! I'm taken into police court and, so help bulls I never see before get up the stand and testify till they're hy fn the face. I come back strong and bawl ‘em out, but, say, bo, I ain't got one chance in a ‘million. What do I get? Me for days—I'm railroaded right!” don't cite this instance as a VID WILLIAMS WOULD WALK THE FLOOR FOR HOURS nN fas Nervous From 20 Years’ "# Trouble—Wants- World to Know About Tanlac “of of the medicine I have taken : the last twenty years, Tan- Yac is the only one that I have yet found that will do all they say it will do,” said David Williams, who is employed as saw filer in one of the large mills in Seattle, and lives at 2114 East Columbia street, Seattle, the other day. “When I commenced taking Tan- lac,” he continued, “it had been at least twenty years since I had been able to eat anything without suffering terribly afterwards. ‘was very careful about what I ate, but my stomach finally got in such bad condition that the very lightest kind of food.would sour and cause me to be bloated up with gas for hours at a time. I would often have bad cramping spells after eating. I also suffered a great deal with rheumatism in my hands, and sometimes my fingers would be so cramped and drawn that I would have to stop work and rub them for a good while before I could hold my file well enough to go back to work. More than half the time I was not able to sleep on ac- count of the pains in my hands and stomach, and would often have to walk the floor all night long. I finally got so run-down and worn- out that I was hardly able to do any work at all. “That was the condition I was n when I began taking Tanlac, but want to say right here, that by time I had finished my first bottle of this wonderful medicine, everything was very different with me. Why, Tanlac has s0 com- pletely overcome my troubles that I can truthfully say that I am as well and hearty now as I ever was in my life, I have a good appetite, and I can eat and digest anything anybody else can. In fact, my stomach seems to be in first class condition. I don’t have to stop my work and rub my fingers now, for the rheumatism has left me alto- gether. I work hard every day, and. when I go to bed now I have no trouble getting eight or nine hours’ good, sound sleep every night. I can hardly realize the fact that I am a well, strong man again after all these years of suffering, and I am so happy over it all that 1 just want to talk about Tanlac all the time. I am glad to have the chance to publish my experi- ence with Tanlac, for I just feel ike I want the whole world to " know what a wonderful medicine it is.” I| deavor to favor the under dog. Calls It Plot On the other hand, I've seen a wife-beater (and sober, too) raise his hand and swear to tell the} truth. He had been seen by no} less than three persons beat his frail wife until she sank uncon-| scious at his feet. And then he kicked her until a ham-fisted gen-| tleman knocked him for a goal. And that same wife-beater calm- | ly got up in police court and lied and lied and lied. “It's just a plot to put me in| Jail, Judge,” whined the wife-beat- er. “I never laid a finger on her.| Why, I love her, Judge! I wouldn't harm her for the whole world!!”" Nothing but les, you understand. Here's another sample of perjury that happens every day: Somebody Lied “I saw this fellow put his hand in this fellow’s pocket,” says the policeman, under oath. “Jones yells oe help, and I came up just in time to grab him. He had the watch in his pocket when I got him. He's been here before. He was arrested last January for stealing a pair of boots. His mug’s in the gallery.” “That officer ain't tellin’ the truth, Judge,” cries the man in the dock. “I asked this fellow what time it was and he got sore, that’s all. I got sore, too, and hit him, and he yelped. I never took his watch.” Now, somebody lies, that’s certain. ‘What is the judge to do? There's no question that either policeman or prisoner is guilty of perjury. “How do you settle such cases?” I asked Judge Gordon, the first time | this perjury thing began to get my goat, Judge Watches "Em “T have to rely on my judgment to get at the truth,” Judge Gordon replied. “When on the bench Jisten- ing to contradictory testimony day in and day out, it becomes a habit to watch for lies, If I catch a wit- ness lying, be he prosecuting wit- ness or prisoner, I know exactly what to do. Innumerable times I see both factions are lying and I know that there is no other motive than malice. In such cases I en- “I realize that police court it is a swift procedure, ofthmes it is mistaken. If I make a mistake and learn of it later, I’m the first to right the wrong. But if I find that I’ve tren tricked by a clever liar, he need expect no mercy from. me the next time he tries to blind me. “T am well aware that perjury is an hourly crime, and I’ve often thought that an example should be made of the person who lies after he has raised his hand in solemn oath, But while I am thinking of the viola- tion of oaths, the next case comes up for decision, perjury is half for- gotten today, and wholly forgotten tomorrow. “In many respects you are right in saying that the police court oath is a joke. It is until the violator happens to receive his just deserts.” But so long as human nature ex ists, lies will exist. When a man is in trouble and the law against him, | he usyally lies. If he doesn’t lie, he’s ied a fool; if he does, he's called a perjurer. ‘Anyway, if Ananias ever shows up in Seattle’s police court, it'll be with a halo, BIG INCREASE SHOWN FOR AUTO LICENSES Up to June 10, 34,837 auto li censes have been issued by H.
