More Ship Tonnage Was Sunk in the last twelve months than was turned out. Our soldiers—your sons and brothers—may be slaugh- tered like cattle if we do not keep them provided with food, ammunition, and the great quantities of supplies needed to keep an army well, safe, and fighting. A Good Day’s Work Means that you have done your part to save lives, save honor, save country, and to escape vassalage for yourself and your descendants. A speeding up of your work means life, hope, and final liberty for mil- lions—security for yourselves at home—freedom for your fellow workers abroad. Are You Going to Let All the gains for which Americans have fought slip through your fingers by loafing on the job? Time off is no longer a matter of your own business. Consider what it means! There are about 100,000 men employed in ship construction in the United States. The loss of an hour a week per man means a loss of 12,500 working days a week, at a time when it is a crime to lose a single hammer-stroke! Shipbuilders of America the fate of your country, the fate of humanity, the fate of civilization is to a large extent in YOUR hands. Are not your hands safe hands? Are they not to be trusted to hold secure the liberties of the world? We believe they are. Will you not prove it by your work? If so, stand by your country, stand by your brothers in the trenches. Make every minute count for home and humanity. The shipyards of the United States are first-line trenches in the war, and you are an army of working fighters. Fight!
