WHY DOESN'T Viscount K. Ishii, : Chairman Japanese War Mission to U. S. Dear Sir: In your daily speeches since you have landed at a Pacific coast port you have said you have nothing but the highest praise for Americans, especially forthe “lofty idealism,” the unselfish motives that prompted the United States to enter this war. learn what the P. We are delighted with your admiration of us. You say you like us and our cause; that you, too, are inspired to make the world safe for democracy; that you love us because we are fighting for liberty and humanity. “We come to you as allies in a common cause,” you said in one public speech, “as comrades in a gigantic struggle that involves the liberties and sacred rights of mankind.” It sounds fine, viscount. But we want more from Japan in this war than talk. Japan has been in this war for three years, viscount, but has not sent any of its mil- lions of well-drilled troops to help its allies. Japan so far has done virtually nothing in the war except to grow immensely rich by the manufacture of munitions and the sale of supplies to the allied nations. There are those who, failing to understand the alleged Japanese love for hu- manity and liberty, are accusing Japan of trying to wring the best bargain possible from the allies, in the way of territorial annexations and otherwise, before sending its armed forces to Europe. Such notions should be dispelled, Viscount Ishii. And the best way to dispel them is, not to talk, but to FIGHT! 1917 nVERYW a IAY, AUGUST 16, ONE. CENT MEANS Wilson to Tell BY C. C.
