Next day the cows went to pasture on the path of the sheep, the farmer and his dog. Later the farmer's wife fell ill—he went for the doctor and returned with him—by the trail of the sheep. The farm was sold and divided, several owners took sections—and used the sheep road. A village came and then a town and finally the city, and the path became a series of streets and boulevards, each more crooked than a watch spring. There is LITTLE DIFFERENCE and MUCH SIMILARITY between the way most of us use our brain convolutions and the way the Bostonians used the sheep path. Youth's ideas become manhood's assertions— boyhood beliefs stick to old age—we seldom doubt and rarely change. We are lazy. We take the PATH of LEAST RESISTANCE, caring not whether it was blazed by a sheep or a wise man, and we prefer to travel its tortuous winding bends to Nowhere rather than undergo the WORK of straightening the road to Somewhere. They discovered a charming suite, not too large. The pretty, fashionable wife was enthusiastic, the hus- band silent. When the owner said the price wa $65 a month, the young man shook his head. “But it suits me exactly,” said the girl. just can’t give it up.” Weak protests from the husband, mild nega- tives, and finally, ‘of course, darling, if, you say you want it, we'll take it.” The owner, a retired business man, is some- thing more than a landlord. He has a fad, the study of human nature. “I'm considerably interested in you two young people,” he remarked. “Would you object to tell- ing me what your salary is The bride replied, “Oh, $45 a month!” “Then he has also another source of income?” “Well, not just now. But he has expectations. Salary loan com- panies, county prosecutors, and penitentiary war- dens know “what happened next,” in hundreds of similar cases. There is some hope that this boy husband was saved, however. . Said the landlord, “My lad, take an old man’s advice. Rent some rooms for $20 a month and live on the other $25. And don’t let this young woman run up any bills, either. “Teach her that one dollar will buy just exact- ly one dollar’s worth and no more.” The story sounds ridiculous, but it is absolutely true. It is valuable because it emphasizes both the cause and the cure of much extravagant living which leads to tragic consequences. ONE OF Congressman Humphrey's political organs told of the various bills he introduced in congress, but CHARITABLY omitted his $1,250,000 item for the post- office building in that south end swimming hole. Also it didn’t mention his bill for $1,200 for a trip he never intended to make. CONGRESSMAN HUMPHREY wants a million and a quarter more sunk in the “goose pond” postoffice site. Humph!
