He knows pretty nearly everything. If he doesn’t, he finds out—and issues a bulletin on it. The latest one, which came to the desk of Edward D. O’Brien, assistant superintendent of Se- attle’s public utilities, the other day, is on—guess! “Saving Fuel in Heating a House.” Uncle goes into the matter from top to bottom and from all phases. He analyzes different fuels and heating apparatus. It’s a very informative pamphlet. Here’s just one of several hints he glves, which may be of benefit to Seattle householders (he’s discussing furnaces) : “Do not spread fresh fuel over the entire sur- face of the fire. Covering the entire fire not only decreases the flow of air thru the fuel bed, but also lowers the temperature in the fire pot enough to cause incomplete combustion, and consequently a loss of heat up the chimney. “Work the partly burned coal, from which the gas has been driven, to one part of the fire and throw the fresh coal on the remaining portion. The fresh fuel then ignites slowly, the combustible gas fs driven off gradually, and the live coals that are WANT You TAKE THE DINING ROOM OCcK Do BE HANDIER For Cag YOv TO CARRY the seat of his trousers, “while you're up the just phone the garage for help! eee JOKING—HERE’S ONE: A chauffeur who “kids” body all the time was in up lately. If, on the other hand, fresh coal is spread uniformly over the entire surface of the fire, much of the gas driven off is not ignited and escapes unburned.” There you are, father—try it on the furnace! PROTECTING SHIN-PLASTER ARRANZA is starting off nicely to com- plete the financial wrecking of Mexico, In or- dering the Banco Nacional de Mexico—the govern- ment bank of Mexico City—to protect its paper currency issued under the Huerta regime, he has succeeded in forcing that once great institution to close its doors. When all the different kinds of fiat money now floating about Mexico is rounded up and ‘“pro- tected,” there’s going to be a beautiful scrambling of poor old Mexico's banking institutions. They are going to sterilize the unfit, the men. tally deficient, the imperfect, so that “in 7§ years the American race will be perfect’—and to accom. plish this they will deal with about “fifteen million unfortunates.” If the wealthy lady and the professors could look at the picture of the rat we would ask them what assurance they have THAT THEY ARE NOT ENTERING THE SAME SORT OF NONSENSI. We would say, “Wealthy lady and influential professors, how do you know THAT STARVA- tion and miserable homes will not produce another 15,000,000 unfortunates in following 75 years?” “Try feeding and clothing the people by pay- ing good wages before you attempt to take away their birthright of reproduction. “Discover if malnutrition, which in plain language is lack of food, is not causing these defec- tives?” Havelock Ellis once said that most reforms were merely the exchange of one nuisance for an. other—this new scheme promises to be something of a menace as well as a nuisance.
