Published Dally by The Star Publishing Co. Thome Mam 9460 By R. F. Paine HE was one of thoSe quiet, patient women on whose face are written kindness and sympathy unwav- ering. Her profession, her lite-work has been the alleviation of the suffering of others. She has managed a school which turned out dozens of nurses who have kept watch thru the long nights at the bedsides of shot-torn Germans, Belgians, French and British. She has herself often kept such awful vigils. Dying Germans have blessed her and entrusted to. her their last words for their loved ones at home. Wounded boys, awakened from dreams of the beloved Rhine, have called out for her from their hospital cots and fallen away into strengthening sleep with her soft hand gently moving on their hot foreheads. None others were so good, so motherly, so well knowing just what to do to comfort the agonized body as Nurse Edith Cavell, English by birth but an angel to all by calling. But too much love of mankind is death, and Edith Cavell, true to the teachings of all-loving Christ but false to the orders of throat-cutting man, helps British and Belgian soldiers to get across the Ger- man lines in Belgium. In the dead of night men put this woman’s back against the wall of a Brussels prison. A file of men raise their guns. Leaden bullets tear her bosom to bloody pulp and send her upon her face, a corpse. No more cool drinks from her hand for dying lips. The wounded tossing in their misery will cry for her in vain. She lies torn, bleeding, quivering on the ground. They might have had mercy upon her because she was a woman, They might have shown mercy because she had worked nights, days, months, at saving their sick and wounded soldiers. No! The Secret, night-working, infamous court martial would have nothing less than life-blood. It is a necessity of war! To hell with her glorious deeds for sick and wounded! Seize the woman! Slaughter her at night! Belt Line Boosts City RESIDENT BOB BRIDGES, with’ his colleagues on the port commission, completing plans for a mu- nicipal belt line railroad to eliminate the multiplicity of exorbitant switching charges on the water front, have convinced even the railroads themselves that the proposal is sound and worth while. “My eyes have been opened by Mr. Bridges’ open letter to the federal trade commission on this sub- ject,” said Judge F, V. Brown, western counsel for the Great Northern. So the belt line is to be constructed, provided the people vote consent, in December, on the tech- nical point of permitting the port commission to transfer money available for the purpose from one fund to another.
