THEODORE ROOSEVELT C never claimed to be hoavy weight boxing champion of the world, but he won that title once —not for himself. Roosevelt made a champion out ot Peter Maher and beat Choynakt. Tt was when Roosevelt was po- lice commissioner of New York dur- ing the Horton law days, and there was scarcely a fight of importance he did not attend, and when Maher and Choynski were matched tn 1896 Col. Roosevelt and | sat together to watch the fight. He didn't know it—but I was there In the box with him and saw him whip Choynskt, the toughest luck fighter {n the his- tory of the ring. Im that particular year “Teddy” was ripping up the “department” from end to end. No erring or grafting “copper” was safe, for none knew at what time Roosevelt would “ean” him. Peter Maher, the pride of Ireland, ‘was billed to meet Joe Choynski in a 20-round bout at the Broadway Sporting club.
