Although the Mexican field plece is good, we could probably beat them in howitsers and long-range guns. Making every allowance for parses that lie between Vera Cruz and Mexico City, and for the action of irregulars, it seems pretty cer. tain that a minimum of 40,000 men at the actual front, HEAVILY sup ported with ARTILLERY and SUP- Artillery Required to Storm Passes Between Vera Cruz and Mexico City—Gun Carriage of the Sixth Regiment. | But the been surpassed. | PLIES, could go through from the| ‘coast in a fow weeks. If we are drawn into policing the country we may have to pay a heavy price for it in men and in money, and we may tle our hands inter- nationally for a long time to come. Any attempt to enter Mexico at all points, to hold down every prov- ince, to guard every raliroad, is al- most foredoomed to failure. There ix no serious strategical proposition ‘before us in Mexico, taking proper account of our na- tional needs, beyond the two steps already indicated: First, the clos ing up of Mexico at ry point as rapidly as possible, and, second, if that is fruities nee to Mex- ico City from the nearest point. Our resources and our interests will per- mit of nothing more. With our fleet and perhaps something less than 100,000 men, we can seal up Mexico. If we raise double that number of troops, we can reach Mexico City. on the WOMEN WILL SET HOSPITAL COUNCIL PASSES PARALYTIC UP IN BUSINESS The world looks brighter for Thorpe is the paralytic, you re- member, who has been at the county hospital for five years, and who says Dr. Richardson’s two huskies cause he didn't want to change rooms. Cullom proved to be more than $100,000, an amazement to his many friends and supporters, since the old chap has for years run for office and held office on the platform, “he is poor and honest and he needs the money.” INJURED BY TREE, GIRL IS ARRESTED MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., April 29, —Injury, arrest, imprisonment and deportation were the rewards that came to Elsie Fletcher, a Minneap-| olis girl, who tried to be @ man in Canada, Unable to get work here she went to a lumber camp near Port Arthur, Canada. She entered it as an ordinary laborer, having donned a woods- man's sult. Tall, strong and of heavy voice, she played the part well and was chopping her way to jured by a falling tree. Then her deception was discovered. After her injuries were treated she was taken to Port Arthur, ac- cused of masquerading, and sen- tenced to three months in fail. She served the term, was rearrested and deported. This offer had been submitted to Mayor Gill by Attorney Harold Pres- ton, representing the receivers of the line. According to the committee, the total payment would amount to about $2,000,000 for a line that was worth only one-third of that. The council will demand common user rights on the Renton line so as to make connection between Division A and the Lake Burien line.
