asses RRR An Newspaper. 13,000 SOLDIERS LANDING AT VERA CRUZ One of the Important events in the war with Mexico was the landing of troops at Vera Crus, which was looked upon as the “key to the country.” Gen. Winfield Scott, who left New York, November Mexico, had charge of the expedition. He assigned 12,000 men and appointed the island of Lobos place of rendezvous. He successfully landed near Vera Crux March 9 30, 1846, to take command of the American armies tn about 125 miles north of Vera Cruz, as the 1847 Just opposite the city was an tsland fortress called the Castle of San Junn de Ulloa, which the Mext cans regarded as invulnerable.
