M. im et 1] President Wilson, in one of his speeches, laid exceptional stress and emphasis on this statement: ‘ IT Is NOT BACK TO THE FARM—BUT FORWARD TO THE FARM. ae t ee ; A farm in Washington, from a 2-acre orchard to a relinquishment claim, by the 1910 Census, was worth as an average $11,000. In the U. S., in 1910, 10.2 per cent more people lived in towns and cities than in the country. In Washington, in 1910, 24 per cent more people lived in towns and \ cities than on the farms. Or, that many more mouths to feed than hands to produce. Today, in this state, by Government report, we are buying on the outside, more than $8,000,000 worth of dairy products alone, and other things in proportion. Here's the high cost of living. Here's the wealth of | tions, becoming a producer who sells to the consumer, the farmer. Here's the reason behind the statement of | | Instead of being dependent on the other fellow, he be- comes dependent on you. A city is “not a location, but a frame of mind.” In the city, your labor is capitalized for others, and it is REALLY worth five times more than any other kind of capital. The only place YOU CAN CAPITALIZE IT—IS ON THE FARM, where you can enjoy the “unearned increment” from increasing value of the land as well as the produce from the soil. Frequently, the pay-check stops, the family suffers, and the wage-earner does not know how to live—nor less create a fertile opportunity and his own inde pendence. President Wilson—GO FORWARD TO THE FARM. Here's the reason why a farm as a home means more to your family than life insurance, and greater insurance for the comfort of your family than any business you can take up. Let's look at this in a broad-minded way: Suppose you bought a 40-acre tract and worked in the city five years to pay for it. For the balance of your life, this means independence with freedom from worries and struggles in the city. You are your own boss, and your own landlord. Instead of buying from the producer at a loss to yourself, WITH PROFIT, you reverse the condi- LOGGED-OFF LANDS—A COMPARISON Don’t take my word for this, but pick up your daily paper. In it you will find plenty cf advertisements about “logged-off lands,” $50 to $100 an acre. NOW, WHICH IS THE CHEAPER—#ay, logged-off lands at $20, or even $10 an acre, when you will be com pelled to pay out $100 to $150 an acre to clear it, wasting a year or two of your time, before you can possibly begin to get a dollar back —OR WILL YOU COME TO MY AUCTION and buy land which, If you don’t happen to get some of it that is already under cultivation —WILL YET BE land that you CAN clear with a team of horses and a steel rail, at not over $5 an acre? And, just for argument's sake, let's say you pald as much as $30 an acre for it. Figure this out for yourself. IT GOES ON FOREVER ANOTHER THING—What can you leave to your family better than a 40-acre farm that is bring- - ing them in an independent living for life? In short, why pay cash to them at your death to be squandered in a few short years or have some shyster beat them out of it so soon as you are dead— when they can have a living and independence from a farm so long as they live? CONSIDER THIS: Both you and your family will also enjoy a splendid, free out-of-door life —reaping the independence of the soil, identifying yourselves with the greatest money-makers, the farms—the basis of all wealth, the most positive insurance against and the only means of independence from the strife and turmoil of city life.
