Does the “law of the club” still go on the police force, as it did a few years ago, when citizens were slugged or flogged at the pleasure of the arresting officer? Sergt. Lee Dagner assaulted Alfred Nelson, an auto driv- er, in police court last Wednesday. Dagner is still on the po- lice force. He has not been fired. He has not been “laid off.” He has not even been reprimanded. Evidently the police au- thorities are not concerned much when a cop strikes a plain citizen. Dagner made his attack while the police court was in session. The judge might have jailed the policeman for con- tempt of court, but he didn’t. He allowed the matter to slide. Maybe he thought the proper officials would discipline the of- fending sergeant. *” ” a A 7” It is four days since Dagner made his disgraceful attack upon Nelson, and Dagner is still on the force. It looks as if Chief Bannick’s “Golden-Rule” policy has slipped a few cogs. Maybe it is no longer a crime for an officer to strike a defense- less man. * * * * * There are a number of men on the force who are unfit and who have no right to draw pay from the public to protect the public. AMONG THESE UNFIT MEN _ IS_ SERGT. DAGNER, WHO SLUGGED A DEFENSELESS MAN.
