F old Japan VOLUME No, 55 15 SEATTLE, MINE Was EASy-- AMAGED GOODS ed Frenchman wrote a play called “Damaged Goods.” It was more than even hardened Paris could stand, though the Par astomach for dramatic strong meat The play was forbidden in London. It was forbidden in New York. The reason given by the anthorities of both cities was that it spoke too frankly of unlovely facts of life | Fina however, “Damaged Goods” was produced in Washington the other day before a} select audience of senators, cabinet members, physicians, sociologists and others of high stand- ing in scientific and social reform circles c No admission was charged. The actors who came to Washington from New York to part in the production paid their own railroad fares and hotel expenses The incidental cost of the production was borne by a society of prominent social work- who believe people generally should know and understand the lesson the play teaches, For every city and town in the world has its “damaged goods,” The story is of aman tainted with a loathsome disease, who, think-| ig himself cured, marries. The wife, too, becomes tainted, and trans- mits the black plague to their child. The mother cannot nurse her own baby. A wet nurse is employed. If she nurses the child, there is danger ‘that she, also, will contract the disease. The grandmother of the child pleads that the nurse be kept in ignorance of this danger. She is savage} and ruthless in her love for her daughter's child. > “The baby’s life is worth more than the nurse's,” she argues. "Without milk the child will die.” The terrible moment of denouement arrives. The father of the wife would kill the man who tainted her. But the wise doctor asks—“Have you yourself never taken similar risks?” The husband inveighs bitterly against the women of the street who} poison men. But the doctor reminds him—“Remember, these women were them-| selves first poisoned.” 6 A tale an theatre-goer has * * * Ad * If you are old-fashioned, you will condemn “Damaged Goods” as unorthodox and not “nice.” If you are a modern, you will say the play teaches a powerful and much-need- ed lesson—for others.
