He bit harder, but the substance would not yield under his teeth. Then he took his pocket knife and split the plug open. He gasped—for there, embedded in the tobacco, was a hu man thumb, He hurried back to the cigar store excitedly, and showed it to the owner. How the thumb came to be In the tobacco is a mystery to the tobacco merchants, The only explanation that could be of- fered was that some workman had had a digit cut off while operating one of the big machines used in preparing the tobacco.
