(SS The Beginning of a Great Career the beginning of a route is That a great career is very clearly ¢ tar the fact that so many Star ca out into the business world to win for them elves the respect of their fellow busing men, and eventuall reat career is be them if they will but carry out the business ruined which they g princi mpressions while they ying The Star The boy fice, distribute, « “re carr buy their papers from new busi Thus ollect and work for ness in the various parts of the city they are gaining yalu branch of a modern ) taught that the first and most essential thing le experience business. in the maintenance of any large busine stitution is that each and every one of customers is to receive full value for money in the way of service, etc his They are handling their own bookkeeping system, a very clever but simple system de vised by the office and given to them in the very best of shape for their own maintenance from all st important fact pay all of their bills They leart w to collect money kinds of people, and the n is that they learn to promptly, as they are forced to pay for their papers promptly And t, -but not least, they are taught the art of salesmanship. We have a department of high-class tutors for the express purpose of coaching all of the boys, and of course they have an object as well—that of adding a perpetual income to their route. The last reason why Star car riers are a success is by no means a small item, for it is a recognized fact that a real salesman need never fear not being able to gain a good livelihood anywhere at any time. Star carriers do develop into good salesmen, as they are taught how to talk to all kinds of people and present a forceful argument from the start. They develop a faculty which they will carry with them through life, as the im pression which a man receives in his boyhood days is always a lasting one if it is strong enough. made Although every Star carrier realizes that every time he gets a new customer he is going to make a a certain amount more money, we do not allow this to be the only incentive he has to get in and work on his route. Last month The Star gaye away $145.00 to the carriers for building up their routes, in addi- tion to raincoats, rifles, ete. Never a month goes by but that some spe- cial inducement is made the boys to get in and work and increase their earnings. Last month one boy (Frank Huntley, car rier No. 7) increased his route 110. He was working for a rifle. He was closely pressed by carrier 86, who won the second prize—a dandy sweater coat. They, of course, are not the only ones in the’vast army of Star carriers who are get- ting quantities of new business and making good money at the same time, for there are scores of others who are just as bright, or perhaps brighter, than they are. We need more boys just like these two chaps. We have good routes in nearly every part of the city for the right kind of boys. They can be had by calling on the Circula- tion Manager, at The Star Office, or if we cannot secure you a good route in the imme- diate territory where you live, you can se- cure a good corner to sell on every evening until we do secure a route for you.
