He wasted a lot of breath and time to no purpose. He did no good for himself or anybody else. But there are many people even in this day who waste time and energy doing useless things. Among their time-wasting habits is that of reading Dlanket-newspapers. They march laboriously up and down Jong columns of words, and plod wearily on from page to page, stumbling over great masses of type, and all for the purpose of trying to search out a few kernels of news scat~ tered here and there. An entire day can be wasted in this manner, and with little to show for it. An evening is not half long enough to wade through a blanket sheet, and extract from it the news which it contains. On the contrary, a wise man, with a copy of a condensed newspaper like The Star in his hands, can, within a couple of hours, and with the least effort, acquire a complete know!- edge of everything that is going on in the world, and then have time left for other things. But the great quantity of words massed together in the blanket newspaper fools many people into thinking that they Bre getting more for their money. They fail to understand that the publishers of the bulky sheet multiply words with- Out number, in order to fill space around and between adver- Yisements. It is their aim to secure as many ads as possible, and the business men, who fursish them, want “positions Mext to reading matter.” There is just so much news in the world each day, and fm order to publish a blanket newspaper, it is necessary to do to the news what the milkman does to the milk, pump a whole lot of water into it, in order to secure the desired quan- tity. There are tens of thousands of people who see through this game, and who resent it. They have other things to do besides wasting time on such newspapers, and they turn as Of one accord, to papers of the type of The Star, which pub- Tish the news in far less space. During the month of March just closed, this newspaper had a careful count made of the general local news items, which appeared not only in The Star, but in the P.-I, the Times and the News, excepting of course, Sunday editions, as The Star docs not publish on Sunday. This count showed that the general local news items in ‘The Star during the month numbered 1,266, in the Times 996, in the P.-I. 745, and in the News 688. “Personals,” “society notes” and “sporting notes” were not counted. It will thus be seen that The Star leads all the newspa- pers in the city in giving to the public the actual news hap- penings in Seattle, while at the same time this information is placed in a compact readable form, easy to assimilate. The entire aim and effort of the publishers of The Star is te improve the quality of the matter printed, with- out adding to the quantity. Every year sees largely increased expenditures in moncy for this purpose. T ploys enough men to produce a twenty-four page blanket fhewspaper daily without trouble, but their product is all boiled down to the limitations of an eight-page newspaper. As the people of Seattle well know, The Star is the only newspaper which is independent of the contro! of corpora- tions and the money power and also of political bosses. It is the only newspaper which bars out the indecent ad- vertisements of quack doctors, and refuses to print patent medicine ads, Today it is the only newspaper in the city, whose col- umns, both news and advertising, are absolutely clean.
