Since the first tremor at 5:20 Wednesday morning, every minute that has clicked off has added horror upon horror until the people are satiated and stunned. Since the first sinall blaze sprang up at Twenty-second street, each hour has added millions of dollars of property as food for the flames, until it is impossible to give any adequate idea of the destruc- tion wrought, TOO BIG TO UNDERSTAND. Even those who gaze upon the ruins of the once great city cannot comprehend the extent of the disaster, It is one of | thoge great calamities, too big, too horrible, too unreal to be | intelligently grasped in the human mind. | When darkness fell upon the stricken city, hope died out | of every breast and it was then realized that the brighest pros- | pect for San Francisco was the final dying out of the flames which would leave only a barren sand dunne dotted here and oo) with the charred smoking embers of what were once 1 world-famous buildings. TRY TO SAVE PORTABLES. | With the energy born of despair, people set to work trying bro save what portables they could take with them. During the | night there was a succession of slight shocks, which in them- | selves did little damage, but each one served to throw the peo- | ple into a panic. Death was on al! sides and there was no place to seck saftey. The parks were crowded with men and women, jwhile the soldiers with Mausers on their shoulders paraded i the streets enforcing martial law, GHOULS ARE SHOT. Four ghouls caught in the act of robbing the dead, were | summarily shot, but even this did not serve to preserve order. | The riotous element broke into the ruined saloon and whole- sale liquor houses and the streets were filled with drunken men, mad with whisky, excitement and terror And all through the night the flames from a thousand buildings lit up the skies, There was no other light, but the hideous glare made every detail of destruction only too visible to the terrified and helpless inhabitants. There was no rest for the homeless and those who have homes are few and fearful of remaining in them. CROWDS SURGE IN STREETS. Through the long hours of impotent anxiety the crowds surged back and forth, drawn here and there by the news of some fresh disaster or hurried frantically f-om one spot to another to escape a real or an imaginary danger. Every few minutes came the boom of exploding dynamite ad the crash of demolished buildings, and the rattle of the wagons bearing away the dead beat incessantly upon the ears of the watchers. A hundred thousand persons would have left San Fran- cisco last night if there had been any means of getting out. No trains are running and the ferries have stopped, Penned in a _ city of destruction thousands are waiting numbed and stoic- ally for they know not what. | FORTUNES HAVE VANISHED. Class distinctions have been levelled. The highest and the lowest are on the same level. Men, who Tuesday night were worth hundreds of thousands of dollars are this morning | penniless, many of them with insufficient clothing. Women with a lift of wealth and luxury behind them, last night shiv- ered on the cold ground, vainly seeking a short respits in slumber ARE DRIVEN INSANE. Maddened men and women at intervals ran shrieking through the streets in their delirium. Insanity claimed its victims from among those who had gazed on scenes too dread- ful for reason to withstand Thousands of persons are missing and thousands are searching for them. When the flames licked up Mechanics’ avilion the streets were packed with an appealing multitude king its dead, the dead that will never be known. It was only another horror, one in the sickening sequence of a hun- , dred that have occurred in the past eighteen hours. OAKLAND, April jthousand people are homeless and the dead will be numbered 19.—Santa Rosa is wrecked. Ten iby the hundreds.
