THE CHICO A HOODOO SBA-FARING MEN SAY THE SEL 1S A POOR MONEY-MAKER That the steamer Chico is a hoodoo is now generally believed by ship ping men, The last = man tind it out was it, J. Linden, chartered the Chico two ago with the intention of putting her on the Nome run during the sea gon, Me took the vessel for thre months, putting up $4,500 as security for paying the charter price of $1,600 per montp, and made arrangements with the so-called Miners’ Assocts tion to carry a crowd of them to Nome at reduced rates. He claims that the miners were well satisfied with the Chico, but that the master, Captain Anderson, told them the vessel would not go to Nome and other ships, At 1 was a failure Linden could not make both ends Meet and the owners of the vessel Swayne & Hoyt, of Portland, made him forfeit his $4,500. Since that time the Chico has been lying out in the harbor waiting for another charter Some History The Chico ts quite an old-timer on the coast, having been built 1! years ago at Tacoma by Captain Blanch ard. Bhe was then called the Alico Blanchard and under that name op- erated on the sound for several years. A crooked combination of men known as the| ‘orty-five Thieves” then got hold | of her and used her for carrying scrap-iron along the coast. In 1894 she sprung a leak off the California coast near Bureka. and filled half full of water despite the eforts of whe the crew, which was on the point of abandon her when picked up by the steamship Farajlon, which towed | the vessel to port. The boat was then repaired, renamed the Chico, and operated along the coast. Dos-/ ens of sea captains bought small In- terests in her in order to become her master. Captain E. BE. Caine oper- ated her on the sound for awhile in the stom trade, but scon found her to be PS ag money-maker. Captain Carrol, of the A.C. Co., then put her on the Alaska run for a white.
