COLUMBUS, June 13.—Attorney Gen- Ellis, in an opinion to Secretary of State Layton, has held that the kind of business donc by the United States Investors Company is illegal in Ohio and advised him not to issue a certif- fczte. The United States lgvestors Company is a New York corporation and controls & number of subsidiary companies engaged in mining, the stock of which is subjected to the payment of a share of its dividends into- @ pool out of which dividends on the\holding com- pany’s stock are to be paid. CALL BUREAU, POST BUILDING, | WASHINGTON, June 13.—An appro- | priation of $30,000 to be immediately | available for repair of the United States sub-treasury vaults at San Francisco is practically assured. G. C. Bantz, deputy assistant treasurer of the United States, who has recently conferred with Sub-Treasurer Jacobs of San Francisco regarding the work | necessary to pur the vaults in proper | condition, today laid the matter before | Chairman Tawney and other members | of the House committee on appropria- | tions and urged that provision be made | at_once for that purpose. | Bantz' statement, which was sup- ported by Senator Perkins, who accom- panied him, was favorably received, and the necessary amount will doubt- | less be appropriated in the deficiency bill soon to be reported to the House. | The conferees on the lighthouse bill have stricken from that measure the items inserted by the Senate providing for a light and fog signal on Red Rock, San Francisco Bay, and a tender. for the lighthouse service in Hawaiian and Pacific waters. An effort will be made at the next session of Congress to secure the passage of bills making provision for these purposes The Secretary of the Interior today withdrew from any form of disposi- tion whatever under the public land laws a strip of land extending around Goose Lake in Northeastern Californig and Southeastern Oregon in connection with the Pitt River irrigation project. The area withdrawn covers approx- imately 40,000 acres. Senator Flint's bill granting rights of Los Angeles for water, light and power purposes passed the Senate to- day without opposition. L S AR TR EMOGRATS LODKING FOR ISSUES 70 BE USED IN GAMPEN SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE CALL. WASHINGT! June 13. — Having been deprived by Mr. Roosevelt of all their issues except that of tariff revis- ion, after a manner which they com- plainingly declare to be tantamount to highway robbery, the Democrats in the House have been seeking something to add to their anti-tariff ammunition when they meet the enemy in Novem- | ber. Five of the leaders believe they have found a fit companion issue for free trade and they will take it be- fore the country in the early fall, pro- vided their brother Democrats consider | it wise. A movement, getting its initial force from Representatives David A. de Ar- mond and Champ Clark of Missouri, Charles A. Towne and Bourke Cockran of New York and Oscar W. Under- wood of Alabama—prominent Demo- crats all—undoubtedly will result dur- ing the closing days of the session in a party caucus, at which it will be sought to have adopted resolutions condemning the present rules of the House and calling for a radical reform intended to deprive the Speaker of his powers by taking from him his right to appoint committees. If the Demo- crate agree to that which the leaders, barring John Sharp - Williams, will| urge in the caucus, the matter will enter the campaign as an issue and the | country will be told that it is the intention of the Democratic party to make the title of “Czar” a misnomer as applied to the Speaker, and to re- | store to the House its right to be called in truth a deliberative body. Not all the Democrats in Congress | are enthusiastic over the plan of the| men seeking to make the office of | Speaker simply that of a presiding of- | ficer—a mere moderator in an assembly of legislators. Williams, the Demo- cratic floor leader, believes in his heart that the sixtieth Congress is to be a Democratic body, and that he will be its head. He complains on occasion of the iron rule of the presiding of- ficer, but he is by nature as auto- cratic a man as any who ever sat in the chief's chair, and he would be the last man in public life to yield will- ingly a single volt of the power when once he became Speaker. BEGIN WORK FLEARING OUT OF FAIRMONT HOTEL Law Brothers Hopé to Have Bufldiag Ready for Occupamey Early in Nevember. The Fairmont Hotel is now the scene of busy action and life. Nearly two hundred workmen are engaged in clearing out the debris occasioned by the flames that wrought such terrible havoc to this beautiful building. The exterior of the hotel was only slightly damaged by the fire, but the flames played awful waste with the interior. While there was no furniture in the house for the fire to feed upon, the gorgeous silken tapestries of the walls and the luxurious silken hang- ings ‘:.ngl portieres afforded ample fuel for the flames. ‘While the interior, so far as the dec- orations are concerned, is in a sorry state of wreck, the building and its tural supports are prac- tically in as good shape as ever. i The Law brothers anticipate having the building ready for occupancy in i ’ 3 SRR & S99 % #gzg244222 DELINQUENT SALE NOTICE.
