SPAING FLOODS MILL THOUSANDS Villages Swept Away in Valley of Siang in China. Mail Advices Tell of the Awful Destruction of Life. VICTORIA, June 12.—Mail advices from Hankow, China, show that the great floods of this spring in Hunan caused an appallipg loss of life, amounting to tens of thousands. The rivers were highér than in any previous, year and swept over the dykes, sub- merged houses and covered an immense area; in fact, the whole valiey of the Stang was flooded, the floods pouring over the dykes in torrents. Siangtan, a prosperous city, was flooded with water to the second stories of the river- | side buildings. This place is the ter- minus of river steamers, thirty miles from Chansha. All business is at a standstill. At Chansha the river was thick with wreckage \and villagers on floating roofs. The foreign missionaries in Siangtan were heavy losers, though all escaped in boats. The loss of life is placed at tens of thousands. A famine will follow, for the floods brought disaster to an immense area of the best rite-growing districts in Hunan. s o 2 RO, o MAGNIFIGENT HOTEL 15 COMPLETED IN TOWN OF GEMENT SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE CALL. June 13 —Abeut ffty farmers from States in the Middle West gathered at the Great Northern Hotel today to attend the openingsession of the American Sociéty of Equity, which convened officially this afterncon. The society which has as its main purpese the corntro! of prices for farm products, was organized permanently. “Dollar wheat” is the watehword, but wheat is not the only thing for which the farmers interested expect to dictate priees, instead of having them dictated to them by corporations whose interests are céntered in thé large cities. Eg peaches, chickens, apples and everyt! ln‘ that the farmer has to sell come under the head of products for which higher prices will be de- manded. The farmers up-c! to arrange plans to build their own elevators and cold, storage plants, eliminate the middle- mhin and sell direct to the wholesale dealer in the city. % okt b T A noasm"s PHROVE PUZZLE m m.-’?
