Too ch_Shipowners Attend Conference Held Yesterday. Although the owners of steam schooners and other vessels conferred for more than three aours with the committee from the Water Front Fed- eration yesterday, nothing of impor- tance came of the meeting. The committee from the federation in a very amiable manner discussed thé present difficulty with the men who own the ships. So few of the latter were present. however, that no definite action could have been taken had mat- ters reached a focus. When the leaders of both sides saw that the meeting would not result in any definite understanding, an adjourn- ment was taken till 10 o'clock this morning. All parties concerned look forward with hope to this session, though none of them will go so far as to say that the trouble will be settled then. though it is the general feeling along the front that it will. Referring to the statement made on Saturday afternoon by the executive committee of the owners, Andrew Furuseth said yesterday: Replying to the statement that the association has experienced no diffi- culty in securing seamen, I will say it is an absolute fact that the Reveille and the Arctic had no sailors on board they left here. The membe: of the association say that netwithstanding the calamity that has befallen the city they have no in- tention to reduce wages. If they mean to employ the men on the front we freely admit that th have not tried to reduce wages. The fact is they gre paying premium ¢ each man and cannot secure competent men. Important Matters Come Before Full Board in Oakland. A general board meeting of the fire underwriters will he held this forenoon at Reed Hall, Oakland, at which various matters of importance will be taken up. A rumgr was in circulation yester- | day that a motien would be made to rescind the action of last week when it was voted to discontinue the joint | meetings of representatives of in- surance companies at ‘the adjusters’ bureau in the Ferry building. ' This rumor could net be verified and it was strongly denied In several places where information concerning what is going on is generally reltable. The friction between the strong and the weak companies was hrought strongly to the light again yesterday, when meetings that weére held were principally noteworthy by reason of the large percentage of absenteeism. As on the previous days the proceedings were made entirely farcical by those who remained away and so prevented action on the part of the faithful ones who appeared at the appeinted time. There is but one day after this on which Secretary Mohrhardt will send out netices calling the joint meetings to bring together representatives of the companies to hear and act upon the reports filed by adjusters. Wednesday is the last day under the present un- satisfactory procedure. “The strong companies that mean business and intend fair dealing,” said a leading underwriter yesterday. not relish being made parties to what amounts only to a sham, now that it is definitely aseertained that there are companies that will not appear at any meeting. If the recalcitrants sheuld appear, the effect might be the same. If the small people in the business pre- fer to stay away instead of meeting. then it is morally certain that, if they should attend, they would not agree to the adjustments that are made in good faith. “There is no other reason in view for their action except disinclination to | settle on the basis of the adjusters’ re- ports. If they would not settle in that way then the large companies could not certainly travel the same road with them and expect to hold business. the average steam-schooner owmer to | keep freight rates down when he raises | i = tow 1ug Sea Rover, from 3 , for Port Harford YRO—Sailed June 11 —Yachts , Anemone and Lurline, for s 11—Stmr Alcatraz, rived Ste stmr Cascade, frem i e TP 1 0 . Vessels Skip Port Los Angeles. SANTA MONICA, June 11.—By reason of the strike among sailors and steam- ship employes at San Francisco and along the coast, no passenger steam- ships are making regular stops at Port Los Angeles. The strike does not in- terfere with the unloading of deep- water vessels at this port. SIDEWALK WAULT SIVES RECIADS Safe DepositConstructed by Umbsen Proves a Gibraltar. ‘ One thing learned from the recent fire is that the improbable should al ways be reckoned with. Few business houses there were that prepared for emergency and toyved not with the hand of fate. When the great vault of the G. H. Umbsen Company, located under the sidewalk in front of the firm’'s recent office at 20 Montgomery street, was opened everything in it| was jntact and in perfect condition One year ago the Umbsen Company | built the vault under the sidewalk | next Montgomery street. In this vault were located two large safes and shelves for the reposal of valuable records, documents and papers. The walls of the vault were two feet thick | and of brick. When the fire came on April 18 the steel door of the vault| was closed and the members of- the | firm departed reassured, for they had| in the stability of their vault When the vault was opened shortly after the fire no evidence of heat was observed, except on the paint of the outside door. Tons of valuable papers | were in it. With records of the in- surance policies kept by Umbsen, the fire underwriters were able to proceed | in the matter of adjusting. The firm | lost not a paper of value and has been | able to resume business on its Oldl Among the contents of the vaulh were eight large wooden boxes in| which were the card bookkeeping systems. Every night, no matter what | the closing hour, the clerks of the firm lugged these heavy boxes into the vauit beneath the sidewalk. The work was religiously performed and it had its reward. Harry Umbsen believes that vaults| constructed as his was are {mpervious | to the ravages of fire.
