Rapid Transit Is Nec for City’s Rehab- ilitation. The Board of Supervisors yesterday passed to print a resolution calling upon the United Railroads to proceed as rapidly as possible in the work o converting its cable roads into trolley lines, that the great northern section of the city may be served, trade revived and confidence restored. There is no question but that the resolution will be finally passed, and | that in obedience to its command the United Railroads, notwithstanding the | complicated engineering problems in- volved, will immediately begin the work. and incandescent lamps will then burn, and where stagnation of trade ‘mow exists activity will soon again. prevail. The difficulties that will be faced by the United Railroads in the work of re- construction are stupendous. neering problems that demand the highest skill of the engineers will be confronted on every cable line in the city. Grades similar to that of the Fillmore-street hill at Pacific avenue exist on nearly every cable road that is to be converted into an overhead trolley line. Not only will the surmounting of hills be a great problem, but in one case the tracks will have to be relald to conform with the gauge of the elec- tric cars that will soon be running through all parts of the city. Taking the cable roads in order as they pass through the northern sec- tion of the Western Addition, the Pow- ell, Jackson and Washington street line will have many hills with steed grades. On Powell street, The be there is a steep ascent. engineers say it ray ticular, company’s found necessary to overcome the grade by terweight cable, which can be at- ed to cars going up and down the simultaneously. each acting as a balance on the other. On Clay and Sacramento streets steep grades are met with from the | top of Nob Hill to the foot of the Chi- natown ruins. Especlally steep are the grades in the vicinity of the Hotel Fairmont on both of these lines from Mason street to Kearny. The next road belonging to the big corporation is the Sutter street and its tributaries. The old Sutter street | cars are of broader gauge than are the electric. and for the entire length of ! the system one rail will have to be laid | several inches closer to the other. President Calhoun has said, however, that this work of relaylng can be fin- ished in thirty days by working a smal] army of men. The trolleying of Sutter street,-Lar- kin and Polk would practically give another crosstown line to the city, and would permit the running of through cars from the ferry building to the Cliff House by way of Market, Sutter and Clement sfreets. - The Eddy and Ellis street lines are now running the entire length of their routes. Colonel Hutchison's letter reads as follows: . “1 am 85 ycars old to-day, and 1 wish I could come face to face with everycne of my age in this country. I could give them an account of sickness dispetied and health restored which is ittle short of a miracle.
