BIG FACTORY WILL RESUME BUSINESS WITH MARY HANDS A notable example of the rapidity with which the crippled business houses of San Francisco are recovering their equilibrium is the resumption of work in the big factory on the cormer of Grove and Laguna streets. The concern is engaged in the manufacture of tex- tile goods for which it is certain there will be an unprecedented demand in a short time. The firm is the Gantner & Mattern Co. of knitters. The factory will give immediate em- ployment to a force of more than 300 men and women who have been autt;: work since the day pfevious to earthquake. It has been impossible to obtain the electric power needed or the place would have been opened before this. The owners of the factory say it will be running day and night froza now on until the needs of the public are sup- plied. Today all the wheels will be turning. This is one of the first manufacturing concerns to resume business on a large scale, but it is the forerunner of many others. Some of the products turned out by the firm are men’s and women’s underwear, silk, wool, lisle and cotton | goods, sweaters, jerseys, hosiery and cardigan jackets. The factory buildings were practical- ly undamaged by the earthquake, 8o the employes may feel perfectly safe. It is planned to enlarge the mills in order to turn out a larger amount of products at the earliest possible date. Insurance. In view of numerous applications a special department for collection of insurance losses has been established, in charge of competent experts. = A. Hetch-Hetchy Ba- » Sin Is Favored as Source. —_— . _The Independent Leagus of Califor- nia has sent to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors the following communi- cation, urging the acquisition by the y of a municipal water supply: “‘To_the Honorable, the Mayor and oard of Supervisors of the City and County of San Frameisco: .“‘The Independent League, like most citizens, having the best interests of the city and State at heart, think this an opportune time fo ask you to officially request the secretary of the interior, through the President of the United States, to grant this city and county the right to take its supply of water from the Hetch-Hetchy basin and to construct dams, lay pipes, and do every- thing else necessary for that purpose within the jurisdiction of the Unitedl States. ‘‘As you know, the attorney general of the United States- has recently de cided that the secretary of the interior has the power to grant this permission, and in view of the repeatedly expressed desire of the President and other om-i cials and representatives of the Stntes‘ | and United States to help this stricken city, the grant will immediately follow your request. | ‘“That it is the most available and' for years and is still admitted by all competent to judge and not having con- | flicting interests. In view of the fact| that the city will not have to pay any- thing for private rights to the supplw, | as is the case in all the bids to furnish | water supplies and systems recently | submitted to the Board of Supervisors, | there ought not to be, and undoubtedly will not be, the slightest hesitation in immediately —making the request | through the President of the United States in these days of expressed pat- | riotism. ‘¢ Especially is this so when we know that nearly every dollar expended will be paid to workingmen and mechanics of all kinds, and not one dollar to pro- moters, however worthy they may be. Thus the problem of the relief of the people and city will be in a great meas- ure solved by furnishing remunerative employment to the largest number sof people and thus enable them to build or repair their own houses and buy théir own food, clothing, etc., just as they did before the fire, and which is absolutely necessary to rebuild the buildings and business of the city. ¢“If it is said that it will cost more than the other systems offered, who will | object when the city will know from | its own supervision of the eonstruction | that it is properly done and will not go | back on us when put to the test in a erisis like that of April 18th. When it is admittedly the best supply comsid- ering the best interests of the future great city that we hope for and are | talking about; and especially when | every dollar of extra cost (if there is any) will go into the pockets of me- chanies and other working men whose prosperity is the prosperity of this and all great cities? s ¢“We therefore most sincerely and re- spectfully petition.you to immediately CALL—ELEVEN—Wright May 7 DAILY DOPE make this request throu%h the patriotis President of the United States, and will ever remain, ‘“THE INDEPENDENCE LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA, By JOHN L.
